Possible New Trend That Could Hurt NCAA Basketball

Brandon Jennings

Brandon Jennings is a 6’2 point guard who recently graduated from basketball powerhouse Oak Hill Academy where he broke the school scoring record. If Jennings had his way he would be in the NBA Draft this coming Thursday if not for the infamous ‘one and done’ rule which was put in a place by the NBA a couple of years ago. The rule requires you must be 19 before July 1st each year to enter the draft. Obviously, Jennings is a highly sought recruit that the Arizona Wildcats is hoping and praying will come to their university to play ball, but Jennings is currently having issues scoring well on the SAT so he might not be able to get into Zona. Due to this issue Jennings has kicked around the idea of going to play overseas where not only could he play against solid competition, but he could also get paid. Brilliant! How come it has taken someone this long to figure out this solution rather than being forced to attend college when they don’t want to do so? If this trend begins to become popular, which I don’t see how it will not, then the NCAA will further suffer because these stars won’t even play for one year.

College Basketball Underclassmen Coming Back

NBA Draft 2008

Today was the deadline for all playas to announce whether or not they were truly declaring for the NBA Draft or merely “testing the waters.” I applaud the list below for electing to return another year rather than getting drafted at some point in the second round (no guaranteed contract) or even worse not getting picked at all. Another year of college will do each of them a world of good. Carolina has to be stoked to stay the least to get all three gentlemen below back for another year along with formerly announced Mr. Everything Tyler Hansborough. You can bank on the fact UNC will be preseason #1 in all major college basketball polls.

* Wayne Ellington G North Carolina
* Ty Lawson PF North Carolina
* Danny Green F North Carolina
* A.J Abrams G Texas
* Robert Dozier F Memphis
* Robert Vaden G UAB
* Jeremy Pargo PG Gonzaga
* Ronald Steele G Alabama
* Chase Budinger G Arizona
* Lester Hudson G Tenn-Martin
* Josh Akognon G Cal State Fullerton

Tyler Hansbrough Staying Put

Tyler Hansbrough

News out of Chapel Hill today states the AP Player of the Year Tyler Hansbrough will return for his senior season with the UNC Tarheels. I give two thumbs up to Tyler for returning when he is without a doubt a guaranteed lottery pick and his stock is probably as high as it will ever be as a collge player.

On another note, Ty Lawson and Wayne Ellington have both made themselves available for the draft, but haven’t hired agents. Lawson is close to being ready for the next level, but Wayne Ellington is so far away it’s scary. The only thing I can say is I’m glad you went the non-agent route.

Good Ole Rocky Top

Lady Volunteers

Pat Summit and the Lady Volunteers won their 8th National Championship last night in Tampa against the Stanford Cardinal. I know the talent level and competitive landscape is different than mens basketball, but this is nonetheless one heck of an impressive feat. Summit now has 983 career wins and will without a doubt break the 1000 win mark next season. Congratulations to Pat Summit, Candace Parker and all the other Lady Volunteers on their 36-2 season and their National Championship!

Is Roy a Softy for Kansas??

Roy Williams wearing Kansas sticker

Did anyone see Roy Williams wearing a frickin Kansas sticker on his sweater last night at the National Championship game? Excuse me if you feel I’m off base, but when you are the head coach for a university all your focus and support should revolve around that team and that team only. I understand he was the coach for Kansas previously and had a very hard time leaving the Jayhawks, but he did leave. If you were retired Roy I would give you a pass, but you were playing against this Kansas team just two nights before and if I was a Carolina fan (and I’m not) I would be PISSED at you for giving them props two days later. This is just my opinion and if you disagree with me I would love to hear your thoughts.

Psycho T Too Much

Tyler Hansbrough

Tyler Hansbrough led all scorers last night in the UNC 83-73 victory over Louisville in the Elite Eight bout. Louisville gave UNC all they wanted, but in the end Tyler hit big shot after big shot to will his team to victory. Hansbrough ended up with 28 points and 13 rebounds, but most importantly a Final Four berth for his Tarheels. I am having a hard time thinking of another player in college basketball over the last 20 years who plays with as much passion and desire as Hansbrough does for 40 minutes every game.

Kevin Love from the Heaven Above

UCLA fans have to enamored with Kevin Love and his superior play as a freshman for the Bruins. UCLA easily handled Xavier last night 76-57 and have advanced to their third straight Final Four. Third straight! Love is fundamentally sound and is one of the best big man passers in the game today. Check out this video clip of Kevin Love hitting a half court shot, a 3/4 and a full court shot in practice. It looks so easy!
