Quick Hits: May 15th, 2006

  • Former McDonald’s All American Eric Boateng is transferring from Duke to Arizona State. This is a huge first get for Herb Sendek, who also transferred from the ACC (NC State) to Arizona State a little over a month ago.
  • Hey Rasheed, did you mean TONIGHT’s game when you guaranteed a win over the Cleveland Cavaliers? Nah, I didn’t think so.
  • Former Virginia Tech QB and general troublemaker/finder Marcus Vick has signed a contract with the Miami Dolphins. What the heck would make the Dolphins, already burned by Ricky Williams, take another chance on someone like this? I know everyone deserves a second chance, but with Vick, we’re on, like…….6 or 7!
  • Doug Flutie, 21 year veteran of professional football, is calling it quits. This is probably the first time in Flutie’s career that he actually has decided to quit. The ultimate warrior, he often overachieved and outperformed all the expectations people put on an undersized QB. He was never a superstar, or earned mega-money, but he holds a special place in all football fans hearts. Congrats on finishing one career, and starting another. Flute: An all around good guy.
  • Reggie Bush may be having an MRI on his hamstring and hasn’t been active yet in camps, but he has his mind set on being in camp on time and has told his agent specifically, NO HOLDOUTS. And I for one would like to add, AMEN!

Who Would You Build Your NBA Franchise Around?

With the NBA Playoffs going on right now, I’ve been camped out in front of the tube for weeks, and intend to continue for the next few weeks. But while watching the Heat and Nets today, I began to ask myself the question of “If I were an NBA GM, and had a new team, what one player would I take over all others to build my team around?” Would I go for age and experience, or youth and potential? A guard or a center? A scoring machine or a defensive specialist? I’m gonna list the few that I considered below, but YOU tell me who YOU would take and why.

  1. Kevin Garnett: A true warrior. Has never had the opportunity to play with a great supporting cast, and probably deserves to do so. Never finds himself in trouble off the court and, at least in public, never knocks someone else to make himself look better. Plays as hard as he can EVERY night, and produces. You need points, he brings them. You need rebounds, he cleans the glass. Solid in every aspect of the game. He has been in the league for a long time, but he came in as a high schooler, so age shouldn’t be a problem yet.
  2. Kobe Bryant: I hate to say it, because I don’t really care for him, but the guy can carry a team. This is where, as a GM, I’d have to try and separate business objectives from personal feelings. Can score, and as we saw in the playoffs, can takeover a game and win it all by himself more often than not. With all those things, he has had problems being a teammate. Well, when you can control a game by yourself at will, do you really need to be a good teammate? Yep, just as Shaq. Those guys would still be winning championships in LA if Kobe could have been easier to get along with. And if you’re willing to get rid of several championships so you can get all the credit, you ain’t playing on my team.
  3. Steve Nash: Nash controls the tempo of the game better than any other point guard in the game right now. He can score if he needs to, but prefers to get the rest of his team involved. He is a master at getting them the ball in the best spot to get a score. And best of all he is durable, having only missed 14 games in the last 3 years. Finally, unlike Kobe, he is a super teammate and oozes team chemistry.
  4. Dwayne Wade: Young, hungry, and talented, the deadly combination. Speaking from the standpoint as a GM/Owner, the marketability of a Wade is off the charts. His public image is impeccable and clean cut. But his game is even better. Can generate excitement on the court with his acrobatic displays and scoring. Plays hard on both ends of the floor and from all appearances is a key ingredient in the Heat’s team chemistry.
  5. LeBron James: It would be hard to find many arguments against starting a team with James. He scores, gives it up, rebounds, and energizes the fanbase. He demonstrated his worth yet again yesterday with his 2nd triple double in the 2006 playoffs. Only Magic Johnson had more triple doubles his first time through the playoffs. The only thing you could question is James’ age, but that isn’t that big a deal with him.

Ok, as if you couldn’t tell from my quick blurbs on each player, Dwayne Wade or LeBron James would be my choice. If you were twisting my arm, and I had to pick right now, I’d go with Wade. He hasn’t had the NBA handed to him on a silver platter (and I’m not saying James didn’t deserve it), but he may have a little more to prove. Now, tell me why I’m wrong, and who it should be.

Cavs Shorthanded, Still Prevail

Yeah, the Cavs won and that at least gets them off the mat. But the bigger story here is the fact that Larry Hughes, a SIGNIFICANT contributor to Clevelands team was not in attendance. He was with his family following the passing of his younger brother. I was terribly upset to learn about this sad situation. Larry’s brother, Justin, had a history of medical conditions in his 20 years, including a heart transplant 10 years ago. As a matter of fact, this was probably the biggest factor influencing his older brother to make the jump to the NBA when most scouts thought he needed more time to develop his game. But his family needed money in the worst way, and he did what he had to do. Thankfully, it worked out for him, until just recently. I commend Larry Hughes for the way he has handled himself, and the way he has provided for his family, but one thing comes to mind. I’m sure all of you have heard the old saying “Money can’t buy happiness”. I’d be willing to bet the Hughes family would agree today. Our thoughts and prayers go out to them.

Quick Hits: May 12th, 2006

Haven’t done one of these in a few days, so here goes:

  • GREAT NEWS! Duke and Gonzaga are going to meet on the hardwoods next year. BAD NEWS! The best players each team has had in many years will be departed and in the NBA somewhere. Too little, too late.
  • Once can’t miss superstar QB Ryan Leaf, who crashed and burned big time, is trying to make a new name for himself, this time as a QB coach. His new position will be for the Division II West Texas A&M Buffaloes. It does appear that he has his head on straight now, and if he really has learned from his meltdown, I wish him the best.
  • Clemson head football coach Tommy Bowden is peeved. Apparently, Florida’s all-everything QB recruit Tim Tebow took a friendly visit to one of Clemson’s more heralded signees, CJ Spiller. Clemson contends the visit broke NCAA rules that state you can’t send a player to recruit other players. But the Gators maintain they didn’t send him, and find it ridiculous that the kid can’t even have friends to hang out with, lest it break the almighty NCAA rules. My take: Bowden needs to simmer down and quit whining.
  • Justin Gatlin broke the 100-meter record Friday with a time of 9.76 seconds at the Qatar Grand Prix. He shaved one-hundredth of a second off the mark of 9.77 seconds set by Jamaica’s Asafa Powell on June 14, 2005, in Athens, Greece.
  • Albert Haynesworth, DE for the Tennessee Titans, turned himself in on Friday on charges of reckless endangerment. According to the report, Haynesworth tried to run James Bond and his mother in law off of Interstate 40 with his truck. I mean, come on, all they had to do was get back in front of the truck and use the oil slick, or whatever else Mr. Bond has installed on his…..Mustang?
  • Kasey Kahne has his 3rd pole in the last 4 races at Darlington.
  • Johan Santana is hot right now, and tonight was no different. Check this: 7 innings, 10 Ks! Combine that pitching effort with 3 HRs by the Twins, and you have a 10-1 rout over the defending World Series Champs White Sox.

Harrington Gets Fresh Start With Dolphins

joey harringtonWell, Joey Harrington finally gets to get out of Detroit. That’s great for him. Unfortunately for him, and for Steve Mariucci, it was a year or two too late. Harrington is headed to Miami, where he probably will start the season should Duante Culpepper not be fully rehabbed from his knee mutilation from last year.

The thing is, I have a funny feeling that he is going to start off really well in a Dolphins uniform, and if it weren’t for Culpepper, I would fully expect Harrington to show us what made him a top draft pick several years ago. And who knows, Saban is not your typical coach, and may not let financial costs be the sole reason a QB gets the starting position.

Harrington has the tools, but he put himself in a situation from which there was no recovery in Detroit. Kinda like the movie “The Replacements” and the discussion on quick sand. You start off and you’re ok, but you make a mistake, and you try a little harder to do better, but that goes wrong, and the harder you try, the further you’re sinking in the quick sand. Joey Harrington was about as deep in the quick sand as you can get and still be surviving. This is a good day for Harrington, and for the Lions, and I’ll bet, ultimately, the Dolphins. But what do you think?

Athletes and Drugs

Cliff RobinsonWhat the heck is it with athletes these days? We have already discussed, probably too much, the tale of Ricky Williams, who was busted during the offseason. But how about a dummy who can’t keep himself clean during the freaking PLAYOFFS?!?!?! Cliff Robinson, who I swear is old enough to know better, got caught violating the NBA substance abuse policy. So instead of helping his team defend Shaq and the Miami Heat, he will guarding against the munchies at 3am. Way to go! If anyone has a logical explanation, other than “Dude, he’s like, free to do whatever he wants maaaaan…”, I’d love to hear it!

Williams Can Run, But He Can’t Hide

So Ricky Williams wants to play for the Toronto Argonauts. We’ve talked about that already. But if Ricky ever wants to get back in the NFL, he is going to have to participate in the league’s substance abuse program, meaning he could be tested up to 10 times a month. Great. However, Ricky wasn’t planning on having to take drug tests for the CFL too. That is apparently being considered if the Miami Dolphins agree to letting Williams play in the CFL this season. You know what, no matter how many times you test him, the results will always be the same. Ricky will always be a wasted talent, who can’t control himself, and will ultimately, sadly, self-destruct.

US Immigration

Gavin GrantI know, I know….a sports forum, and we’re talking about immigration issues? But in this case, the two are intertwined. Gavin Grant, a sophomore G/F for the NC State Wolfpack is in a little legal hot water. When he was 10 years old, his mother came here from Jamaica, and obviously Gavin came with her. Now, 12 years later, good ol’ Uncle Sam is going to try and send him home. Makes a lot of sense, wouldn’t you think? It does, except for a few things:

  • Grant is in college, working on a degree. I guess it would be OK and they would let him slide if he were off working in a field somewhere in Arizona.
  • Since Grant and his presence in the United States has absolutely no bearing on the all important and oft-pointed to “price of a head of lettuce”, he needs to be gone?
  • He is married to an American citizen, and has a 1 year old child. What happened to not breaking families up. Isn’t that why they sent Elian Gonzalez home, to be with his father and not split the family up?
  • A couple of weeks ago, there were protests in every major city in the US, yet not one arrest was made or one green card was checked. But they’re willing to pull a kid OUT OF SCHOOL and make an example out of him?
  • Sending Grant home to Jamaica would most certainly send a vicious message to the reported 300,000 illegals in NC alone (HAH!)

If all things and issues were being pursued with the same amount of vigor and fairness, I wouldn’t have a beef with anything right now. But what they’re doing with a guy who is doing the right thing, and is a good kid, doesn’t seal the border or solve the problem. When you put up a fence and start deporting the illegals who are raping our system and country, THEN come talk to me about sending Gavin Grant back to Jamaica. Until then, kiss off!

Hurricanes Blow Past Devils

hurricanesWell, the Carolina Hurricanes didn’t want to fall in the same hole they did at the beginning of their first series. They thoroughly pistol-whipped the New Jersey Devils on Sat., 6-0. The Devils have been on cruise control over past little stretch, and having no trouble in the first round. Well, Carolina applied the brakes behind a balanced scoring attack, with 5 players scoring the 6 goals. New Jersey also hurt themselves, as 5 of the 6 goals were scored on power plays. Can’t win giving the other team that many opportunities. You have to think the series won’t be quite this easy for the Hurricanes, but it helps to start off on the right foot and not be pushed against a wall.

Ralph Sampson In Over His Head

And that’s a tall head to be in over! Right now, Sampson is facing charges of mail fraud, perjury, and being a dead beat dad. Things just keep piling on. The Details
