A-Rod Joins Elite Club

Alex Rodriguez

Alex Rodriguez hit his 500th home run today against recently acquired Kyle Davies (Davies was traded from the Braves to KC for closer Octavio Dotel) of the Kansas City Royals. A-Rod homered eight days after his 32nd birthday to surpass Jimmie Foxx (32 years, 338 days) as the youngest player to ever reach the 500 club. Love him or hate the guy is a stud. I would like to hear if you think he can break the overall home run record that will eventually be set by Bonds?

Braves Beef Up

Mark Teixeira trade

The Atlanta Braves have required a much needed first baseman in Mark Teixeira today from the Texas Rangers. Teixeira is batting .297 this season with 13 home runs and 49 RBIs and will be a major upgrade from Julio Franco who was playing first for Hotlanta. Texas traded Teixeira and middle relievevr Ron Mahay for Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Elvis Andrus and two minor league pitchers. Saltalamacchia and Andrus were considered by many to be the Braves top two prospects. The Teixeira acquisition will be helpful this year, but did the Braves actually give up too much?

Kudos Jon Lester

Jon Lester

Jon Lester a pitcher for the Boston Red Sox has been called up from the minors and will start in tonight’s game against the Cleveland Indians. Why is this a big deal? It was only a year ago that Lester was diagnosed with cancer. I hope this leads to a long stay in the big leagues for Lester who obviously has tremendous perseverance and he deserves the best.

Kendall to the Cubs

Jason Kendall

Jason Kendall and cash were traded today from the Oakland A’s to Chicago for catcher Rob Bowen and minor league left-hander Jerry Blevens. Kendall has been an excellent hitter over his 12 year career, but this year he is hitting a measley .226. Call me whacky, but I think he will be another spark to an already HOT team even though he has been down this year.

Bonds Is A Little B@%ch

Barry Bonds

Wahhh..I’m 1 out of my last 24 at-bats. Wahhh..my ankles and knees are swollen so I pulled myself from the lineup tonight in Wrigley against Chicago. Wahhh…I want to break the home run record at home because I will get booed on the road. It’s time to get your head out of your a$$ Bonds! Sorry, my tourettes attack is over, but damn I can’t stand Bonds.

Jennie Finch Should Make America Proud

Jennie Finch

Jennie pitched a shut out today against Canada to advance the United States to the championship game in the World Cup of Softball. No I wouldn’t be writing about this at all unless it wasn’t a shameless plug just so I could post a picture of her here are the Underground. She just might find her way on to our Top Sports Babes page soon.

10,000 Losses

Philadelphia Phillies 1000th loss

The Philadelphia Phillies achieved this great feat tonight in a 10-2 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals. They are the first professional team to break this barrier and I’m sure they are proud. 😉

Pujols Pissed

Albert Pujols

It seems Albert Pujols is rather upset about not getting in the All-Star game last night in San Francisco. His own manager Tony LaRussa didn’t put him in the game last night with two outs and the bases loaded down 5-4. LaRussa opted to have Aaron Rowand bat for the second time in the game and he flied out to right field to end the game. Pujols said after the game, “It’s the All-Star Game. He can do what he wants.” “He does whatever he wants. If I wasn’t expecting to play, I wouldn’t have come up here.” Ouch Albert! Tony has pissed players off before…(coughing Scott Rolen)…so we will see what happens with this ordeal. I don’t think you want to piss off one of the top five players in Major League Baseball do you Tony?

Hargrove Resignation Leaves Questions

Mike Hargrove resigns from the Seattle Mariners

I am having a hard time believing Mike Hargrove resigned yesterday from the Seattle Mariners because he lost his passion for the game.  His team was on a seven-game winning streak and they have the best record in the Majors since late May.  How do you struggle through six losing seasons with the Orioles and the Mariners then once you start winning you want out?  This is a man who has been involved with MLB since 1972 and 15 1/2 of them has been as the manager.  Something smells so fishy here, but I can’t put my finger on whether this was a locker room issue or if Hargrove is having personal issues.  Thoughts?

Over the Hill Gang

Over the Hill
There is going to be seven starting pitchers today in the Major Leagues over the age of 40. This will break the MLB record set just last week when there were six starters over 40 taking the mound in the same day. Roger Clemens, John Smoltz, Greg Maddux, Jamie Moyer, Kenny Rogers, Tom Glavine, and Woody Williams all get the starting nod today for their respective team. Each of these guys are role models for all up and coming professional baseball players.
