George Steinbrenner continues to show each year that he is not afraid to spend money to better his team. Yesterday the Yankees picked up Bobby Abreu from the Phillies along with starting pitcher Cory Lidle. The Yankees traded away four minor league players to the Phillies in return for Abreu and Lidle. New York’s need for pitching and a productive bat in their depleted outfield motivated them to take on Abreu’s hefty contract, hoping he can help them catch first-place Boston in the AL East. We have seen these big moves over recent years with the Yankees before the trade deadline, but it hasn’t paid off in a big way. I suspect come October the hopes and dreams of a World Championship for the Yankees will merely be the hope it comes in 07′ because they will not win it this year.
Each Monday we give away this extremely prestigious award to a very deserving candidate based on fan’s feedback and our own biased opinions. 😉 This week there is no doubt the award goes to Tony Stewart. Tony “the untamed Tiger” Stewart showed us again yesterday he can’t stay under control. He decided to try and wreck Clint Boyer after he felt Boyer pushed him too close to the wall in a turn and this attempt sent Boyer right into Carl Edwards car. Edward’s car was pretty much done for the day and it could hurt his chances for the Nextel Cup series based on the poor finish at Pocono. Carl Edwards did however get his revenge by spinning Stewart out in the pits, but the #20 car was barely damaged.
Stewart was asked after the race about Edwards and he had the nerve to say he didn’t know what Edwards problem was spinning him out in the pits, but if he did have a problem he could wait till after the race to settle it. You should take some of your own advice there Captain Obvious and quit trying to wreck everyone who tries to out race you. You need to grow up, listen to your own advice and quit finding your way into our Dumb A$$ of the week award.
21 year old Jeff Madsen won the $5000 short handed (six player) no-limit tournament over the weekend in Las Vegas. As we pointed out last week, Jeff Madsen is the youngest player ever to win a WSOP bracelet and now he has added a second one. All in all Madsen has won over $1.4 million in the last two weeks with the biggest event yet to be played. The $10k Main Event kicks off this coming Friday and will have over 8,000 players participating with a purse the size of Fort Knox.

The latest mishap in the life of Ricky Williams happened this weekend when he broke his arm in a game against the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Ricky better lay off the cannabis sativa over the next four to six weeks while he recovers or he could be way out of shape for a possible Grey Cup run with the Toronto Argonauts of the CFL. 🙂
Once Lance Armstrong retired it was pretty much a given that the American reign at the Tour De France would end. Floyd Landis obviously didn’t agree with this notion and yesterday extended the American dominance at the Tour to eight years. Landis has an arthritic hip that will be replaced very soon yet he won the grueling race based on his undying determination. Landis was pretty much left for dead earlier in the week when he fell roughly eight minutes behind after Stage 16 in the Alps. Then the very next day Landis miraculously went out and won Stage 17 and closed the deficit to just thirty seconds. The rest is history and Floyd Landis deserves major credit for a jobe well done.
Jeff Madsen is now the youngest player ever to win a WSOP tournament. Madsen won a $2k no-limit hold-em event yesterday at the ripe old age of 21 years, one month and nine days old. The tournament was over a three day period with roughly 1,500 people competing at the chance to win over $600k. Madsen won the large purse and the always coveted WSOP bracelet. Don’t forget tonight starts the showing of WSOP events on ESPN.

Paul Pierce signed a $59 million dollar extension with Boston yesterday. This extension in theory will keep him a Celtic through 2010-2011, but wasn’t it just last year he was in all the major trade talks? I also remember hearing rumors this summer of him being part of a big trade with the 76ers for Allen Iverson. Call me silly, but I don’t think Paul Pierce will take the Celtics to the promise land and I sure wouldn’t have locked him in for another three years at that price point.
It’s been roughly seven weeks now since Barbaro severely broke his leg racing at the Preakness. In that time the horse has gone through 4 operations and the last three have occurred pretty much back to back. Barbaro now has a severe case of laminitis which is a potentially fatal disease caused by uneven weight distribution in the limbs. The vetenarian has stated that Barbaro’s chances of survial are a “long shot” 🙁 and the situation will be closely monitored. Barbaro is certainly a fighter and I definitely hope this magnificent horse lives, but I definitely don’t want to see the horse in pain either.
Things continue to look worse and worse for the National League of MLB. It has been a blue moon since the National League won a world series (8 years to be exact…I think) and they were completely ripped to shreds this year in Interleague play. They also had not won an All Star game in the last nine years (they did tie one – LOL) coming into the “game that counts” last night in Pittsburgh. Remember it counts now because the winning League gets home field advantage in the World Series. MLB wouldn’t actually give that to the team with the best record throughout the year would they??? Anyway, it was the ninth inning and Trevor Hoffman had two outs and up 2-1 so things looked great right? Wrong! In a matter of minutes Paul Konerko hit a single, Troy Glaus hit a ground rule double and Michael Young hit a triple and the American League was up 3-2. Then they bring in Mariano Rivera in the bottom of the ninth and it’s a done deal. It is an ugly thing right now for the National League and unless the Mets really step up there is no chance in H#LL that a National League team can win the World Series.
