Sylvester Set to Receive Statue in South Bend

Sylvester

Lou “Sylvester” Holtz will be in South Bend this Saturday for Notre Dame’s game against the Michigan Wolverines. Lou is being honored with a statue in honor of the National Championship he led the Irish to win 20 years ago. The team went 12-0 by kicking off the season with a 19-17 victory over #9 Michigan, slipping by #1 Miami 31-30, whooping #2 USC 27-10 and then capturing the title with a 34-21 win over Major Harris and #3 West Virginia in the Fiesta Bowl. I don’t blame Notre Dame for throwing a party to remember the ’88 National Title because it will probably be the last one they win until 2088.

Knee Jerk Reaction By Hokies

Frank Beamer

Virginia Tech announced today that quarterback Tyrod Taylor won’t redshirt this season just one week after they said Taylor would sit out the season. Beamer went on to state that Taylor will share duties with Sean Glennon at quarterback just days after an embarassing loss to East Carolina. Virginia Tech was ranked in the Top 20 and had ruled EZU in recent matchups yet fell to the Pirates in a stunning 27-22 loss this past weekend. So does Taylor coming out of his redshirt season mean Beamer has given up on Glennon one game into the year? I find the reaction very suspicious to say the least and only time will tell how much the two quarterback will split time. Don’t count the Hokies out yet, but the loss is a big blow to a perennial powerhouse. EZU could exhibit an even bigger upset this coming weekend when they play host to #8 West Virginia in Greenville, NC.

Surprise, Surprise

It’s been a pretty well known deal that UNC basketball recruits football better than the football staff does. Prime Example:

Greg Little

I mean, why sign with Notre Dame when you can get front row seats to a National Title Run with the Tarheels? I mean, if you can play football, you can play anywhere….but where else can you be guaranteed a seat on a bench that even money can’t buy? CHAPEL HILL!!! Who is that washed up defensive end that pulled the same deal?…..James, Jermell, J….Peppers?

Tommy and the Tigers Show True Stripes

McElrathby

I’ve been meaning to get your opinions on this all week, but have just gotten the chance to sit down and get it out there. Some of you may remember Ray Ray McElrathby, a running back on the Clemson Tiger football team. He wasn’t a big contributor on the field, but off the field he was an all-star. He took in his little brother and cared for him while going to college and playing a major division I sport. Clemson saw their chance to “pimp” their good citizen and get a lot of good publicity for going the extra mile to help in this admirable situation. But scholarship crunches in college football are a bitch. I mean, how can a team be expected to jump out of the gates only to collapse halfway through the season year after year without bringing in new blood? Clemson may have found the answer: kick a good student, and a good kid off the team. Oops, sorry, not kick them off, but not renew their scholarship. Classless, but I mean, it IS Tommy Bowden we’re talking about here. As much respect as I have for Bobby Bowden, I despise Tommy as much or more.

It would be wrong not to at least mention the fact that Ray is set to graduate a year early in August, which is a huge accomplishment with all the external forces acting against him. And yes, Clemson has offered him a graduate asst. role on the team, just no more suiting up. Clemson had no problem flaunting their generosity and compassion, so it’s only fair to point out their self-serving attitude as well. Karma is a bitch Tommy!

Perrilloux Suspended Again

Ryan Perrilloux

Ryan Perrilloux the heir apparent to be the starting quarterback for the LSU Tigers has been suspended indefinitely by the LSU Tigers. This makes the third time now he has been suspended and he is only a rising junior. Spring practice starts for LSU on February 29th and at this time it isn’t known if Perrilloux will be allowed to practice. This could be a pretty big blow to the BCS Champions if this suspension extends into next season.

StonecoldJZ’s Sound Off

StonecoldJZ's Sound Off

* Andrew Bynum is out eight weeks after temporarily dislocating his kneecap yesterday in a 100-99 win over Memphis. The Lakers are currently 4th in the Western Conference, but with this loss you can count on LA being no better than 7th by the time the young kid returns. His DRAMATIC improvement this year is the main factor behind the Lakers improvement and Ronny Turiaf and Vladimir Radmanovic can’t cut the mustard in trying fill his shoes.

* Not only is Darren McFadden leaving Arkansas early for the NFL, but now comes word that junior tailback Felix Jones will also be going pro. That is over 230 yards rushing per game gone from the Hogs as they go into next season. Welcome Bobby Petrino! Thinking about moving on to another team already???

* The Bolts worked the Colts yesterday in Indy. The Chargers were able to orchestrate the huge upset without hardly any reps from Antonio Gates, a mere 28 yards from an injured LT, and without Philip Rivers for the final few minutes of the game. Players with names like Billy Volek, Legedu Naanee, Darren Sproles and Vincent Jackson were the real keys to the victory. I highly suggest there isn’t much celebrating after the victory against the defending SuperBowl champs because New England is waiting in the wings this coming weekend.

LSU Tigers – BCS Champs

LSU Tigers

Congratulations LSU! You are the first BCS Championship winner with two losses, but you were only playing the Ohio State Chokeeyes. Ohio State played up to their normal form last night against LSU and were totally dominated in a 38-24 whitewashing. The Big Ten ended up a disappointing 3-5 this bowl season while the SEC finished 7-2 and that is the bottom line.
