Charles Barkley Gambleholic

Well here is the news story today from Captain Obvious.  Charles Barkley has come out in an interview and stated he has a gambling problem.  All in all he pales in comparison to John Daly’s losses, but his $10 million in losses is no petty cash.  I just don’t find this to be anything we didn’t already know based on many reports of him and Jordan in Vegas or Charles and others kickin it in a casino.  Charles keep it real and next time you are in Las Vegas try to remember not to go “all in” with a 3-8 off suit. 😉

NBA Investigating Kaman’s Claim

Chris Kaman
The NBA is investigating a claim by Chris Kaman that the reason he shoved Denver forward Reggie Evans and received a flagrant foul was because Evans yanked on his family jewels. Chris Kaman stated it took all he could do to not punch Evans out. I’m at an absolute loss of words on Evan’s thought process before doing such a thing, but he needs to punished severely!

NFL Loves NCAA Basketball Players

It seems that the NFL cannot get enough of big NCAA basketball players due to the success of Antonio Gates of the San Diego Chargers.  Gates formerly played basketball for Kent State and then became a STUD in the NFL after being pursued because of raw physical talent.  Yesterday Ed Nelson of UCONN signed with the Rams and today comes the news Jai Lewis of George Mason has signed with the New York Giants.  Lewis has not played since high school, but the Giants feel he could become a defensive end or tight end.  I will say he is really quick on his feet for his size, but who will be picked up next Joakim Noah as a wide receiver?

Why Kobe Why?

I really hate the fact that Kobe is a jerk. I hate the fact that the sports world caters to him. I hate the fact that kids look up to him and he is a role model for them. I hate the fact that I can’t pull for him. But that’s the way it is, and it’s a shame. Kobe makes everything on the basketball court look so easy, with his game ending performance today against the Suns being his latest example. We won’t get into the events leading up to the final shot, because I have a WHOLE other set of opinions about that. Kobe once again took the game into his hands and hit another game winner with 2 hands in his face. Never any doubt.

This season, Kobe Bryant has carried this team. Sometimes he loaded them up in a sack, tossed it over his shoulder and literally carried them. How else can you explain this season? The Lakers were predicted to be the joke of the Western Conference. With a few “projects” and a few “WHO did you say is starting?” players, Phil Jackson and Kobe pulled them together and put together a winning season. In fact, they were good enough to earn a spot in the playoffs. The are currently on the verge of sending the Suns home for the summer, up 3 -1 in the series.  Great basketball players give you the option of having an otherwise marginal team.

Being such a basketball fan, it would make my life so much easier if that summer in Colorado a few years ago never happened. I would SO enjoy pulling for the Lakers and Kobe Bryant. But as it stands, I will never pull for them, and hope they have a historic meltdown vs. the Suns. But it won’t happen. Kobe is too good. Never any doubt.

More Early Entrants

Just a quick little post to add to the latest names of college basketball players who have decided to test the waters of the NBA and declare for the draft. All players who decide NOT to sign with an agent have until June 18th to withdraw and return to school. This is a good opportunity for players who may or may not be ready to get a good evaluation from NBA scouts. Then, they can choose to return to school and have a good idea what they need to work on in hopes of improving their draft status. Declaring for the draft in the last few days:

Grizzlies and Playoffs – Like Oil and Vinegar

Memphis is now a perfect 0-10 in the NBA playoffs. I guess they should get some credit because when they were in Vancouver they never even reached the playoffs. A couple of key points from last night’s game against Dallas to sum up why they stink in the playoffs. The Grizz went sixteen straight possessions without a point and 10:47 between baskets. Memphis lost to Dallas 94-79, but now they head back to Memphis so who knows…oh hell what am I saying they will be 0-12 in the playoffs when all is said and done.

Coack K Breathes Sigh of Relief

Super Freshman Josh McRoberts has decided to return to Duke for his sophomore season. It was widely speculated that McRoberts would make the jump to the Big Leagues, but on Wed. decided to come back to school, where he will be the main attraction for the Blue Devils. The cupboards would really have been bare, at least in regards to Duke standards, next year, so this is really good news for Duke.

NC State Still Searching

LavinBoth Steve Lavin and John Beilein have turned down the offer to take the top spot at NC State today. As a State fan and alumnus, I am starting to get worried. So far in our search, we have been turned down by Rick Barnes, a North Carolina native and someone who apparently had let it be known that NC State was his “dream job”. Then John Calipari slimed his way in and used the Wolfpack to get a raise. Now, just as it was seemingly coming to a closeBeilein with the hire of Steve Lavin or John Beilein from West Virginia, Wolfpack fans must now sit back and wait yet again. The trouble with that is that the recruiting season is now fully in swing, and without a captain for the ship, the very future of NC State basketball is being put in jeopardy. AD Lee Fowler is going to have to make a move, and soon. My wish list for the job include Greg Marshall from Winthrop and Derrick Whittenburg, NCSU hero from the 1983 miracle run. He lacks the major head coaching experience, but did a great job in the assistant role at both NC State under Jim Valvano and at Georgia Tech under Bobby Cremins. And the cherry on top, he is supposed to be one heckuva recruiter. Whoever it ends up being, it just needs to end, and soon!

Bulldogs Get Probation

Fresno StateFresno State’s basketball program has been placed on 4 years probation for recruiting violations. Earlier this year, the Bulldogs had self imposed a ban on post season play for the 2005-06 season. The NCAA decided to extend that probation for another 4 years. Most of the infractions were phone calls to recruits that were either outside contact periods or more than allowed. The “death penalty” was an option, as the school was still on probation going back to the Jerry Tarkanian teams, but the NCAA decided against it.

NBA Draft Announcements

With the April 29th deadline fast approaching, the number of early entrants to this years NBA draft is getting larger. There have been several annoucements in the last 24 hours. Below is a set of links to some of the most recent additions.

The question is, as it is every season, how many of these guys that are coming out early are not going to be drafted in the first round, the “guaranteed money” round? It does seem like more and more of the early entrants this year are not signing with agents, or at least that is the plan currently, so if they so decide, they can return to school as long as the withdraw by the deadline.
