NC State’s Simmons Headed to NBA?

The Sporting News is reporting:

With no one in charge of the N.C. State program after coach Herb Sendek’s departure for Arizona State, sophomore C Cedric Simmons declared for the NBA draft without debate. Simmons already was being contacted by agents before Sendek left. Don’t expect him to return to the Wolfpack.

IMHO, this would be a mistake. Simmons showed quite a bit of potential this past year, with the highlight being his head to head with Duke’s Sheldon Williams. Simmons is 6’9″, but boasts a wingspan of 7’4″. He is long, lean and athletic, and was just starting to scratch the surface of his potential. With the draft being a little “shallow” this year, it may help his draft status a little, but nowhere near as much as another season with the continued improvement he showed between his freshman and sophomore seasons. Cedric appears to be a good kid, so if he does make the jump, we wish him the best.

FWIW, NBADraft.net has Simmons listed as the 13th pick for the New Orleans/Oklahoma City/Insert City Name Here Hornets

LeBron Scores Triple Double

ljamesI’m sure you have all heard about it by now, being that you’re all sports fans, but LeBron James scored a triple double this afternoon in his first playoff game ever. We talked about it earlier today, and I thought he would play well, but geez! Total line: 32 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists. AWESOME!

Dunleavy, Golden State Not Happy

Frankly, you just get tired of talking about the end of dunleavythe season, and next year and not going to the playoffs,” said Warriors forward Mike Dunleavy, who took the brunt of fans’ unhappiness when he regressed despite signing a $44million contract extension on the eve of the season. “It’s brutal, man. I’m so sick of it. Coming from college and high school, where every year we’d play for the championship, and we can’t even make the playoffs. It’s rough. … I guess the good news is we’ve got a lot of commodities. That’s about it right now.”

Now, is it just me, or does this sound a little snotty? I mean, I understand you want to win, but so does the rest of the league. So just because you went to Duke, you’re supposed to be guaranteed to be on a good team. Get REAL!

2006 NFL Draft: T-minus 1 Week

With the draft coming up, all eyes are on the Houston Texans, and what they will do with their #1 pick. The most obvious choice is Reggie Bush. BushBoth Bush and the Texans are in ongoing contract talks. The main sticking point appears to be, hold on to your seats…..MONEY. The Texans aren’t shy about ponying up the cash, but Bush’s team is letting it be known that the #1 contract should be more than the previous years contract. Last year’s #1, Alex Smith, got a $24 million deal. And like I said, the Texans WILL overpay, but they contend that they shouldn’t pay more for a player who is NOT a QB. With that in mind, the Texans have also opened up communications with Mario Williams’ camp.williams The stud DE from NC State is widely acknowledged as the best defensive player in the draft, with measurables similar to and in some cases surpassing those of current NFL star Julius Peppers. If I had to put money on it, Bush is the #1 pick. This kid is going to be one of those guys who…..well, he is just going to be one of those guys. We will look back on him 15 years from now and marvel at his career. That’s not to take anything away from Williams, who I think will also have a stellar career in the NFL, but if you have that #1, you have to take someone who can take some of the pressure off D. Carr.
Also, the Titans have the 3rd pick. Now, I am not going to get into the screw job they’re giving Steve McNair, at least in the post. It is almost a given they are going to be taking a QB, but which one. LeinartMost talent scouts have tabbed Leinart from USC as close to a given as you can get. With that said, Vince Young from Texas offers an extra layer of ability and skills to the QB position. In fact, the Titans may be favoring Young at this point, and that offers up the possibility of trading back, picking up a few more positions, and taking Young a little later in the draft, as it’s not expected for YoungYoung to go to any of the teams immediately following the Titans. Of course, there are some in the Titans organization who would love to get Matt Leinart in there and team him up with Norm Chow, his former offensive coordinator from USC. Right now, the Titans could change the landscape of the first round with what it decides to do.

Ricky Manning Jr. Signs Bears Offer Sheet

With the draft one week from today, the Chicago Bears may have opened up a few doors for themselves but closing down of their needs. The Bears signed Ricky Manning Jr. of the Carolina Panthers to a 5 yr., $21 million dollar offer sheet. The Panthers “have almost no chance or desire to match” the offer. Considering how stout the Chicago defense was this past year, this is a great addition to the defense. He adds depth to an already good secondary, which includes Vasher and Tillman. If the offer sheet stands, the Panthers would receive a 3rd round pick in the draft.

NBA Playoffs: King James Version

Lebron James

Lebron James is headed to the playoffs for the first time, and we for one can’t wait. It’s like a kid waiting for Christmas, just to see what Santa Claus brings for us. Will James wilt under the pressure of his first game? Could be. Kobe shot enough bricks in his first playoff series to build a new arena. But something in my mind says Lebron isn’t Kobe. I think Lebron shines today vs. the Wizards. I guess we shall see.

Arrington Likely To Be A Giant

According to Newsday.com, LaVar Arrington arrived in New York on Thursday and:Lavar Arrington

LaVar Arrington is not a Giant yet, but his agents and the team are inching closer and closer to a deal that would bring the former Redskins linebacker to a team that could certainly use a veteran linebacker.

Sources close to the situation say the deal may actually have been closed on Fri. night. Now, whether the Giants met Arrington’s asking price, we won’t know for sure ’til the ink dries. This is a HUGE addition to the D for the Giants. Getting a seasoned veteran, despite the injury to his knee last year, will go a long way towards making this one of the better defensive units in the NFC.

Lavin Reportedly Offered NC State Position

Steve LavinAfter being turned down by both Rick Barnes and John Calipari (the 2nd of which I think was a sham), it appears the search may be just about ready to wind down.

Mike DeCourcy is reporting:

Former UCLA coach Steve Lavin has been offered the opportunity to return to coaching by the N.C. State Wolfpack.

Lavin has been out of the business for three years and working as a broadcast analyst for ESPN since he was let go by the Bruins following the 2002-03 season, his only losing year as a head coach.

Lavin is working on contract details and has not yet decided whether to accept the job.

Adam Morrison To Sign With Agent

With the image of Morrison throwing a fit at center court after losing in the NCAA tourney still “fresh” in my memory and burned into my minds eye (there’s no crying in basketball!):

A source close to Morrison told ESPN.com Monday that agent Mark Bartelstein will represent the player. Spokane television stations KHQ, KREM and KXLY and FoxSports.com reported Monday night that Morrison had decided to turn pro.

Apparently, neither his mom, nor his coach Mark Few are giving up the info. Honestly, his stock couldn’t be much higher than it is right now, or it was at the end of the season. While I am not big fan, he would be a bigger fool not to do it.
