I Wanna Party With You Cowgirl!

Taurasi faces 3 drunk-driving charges

Mercury star Diana Taurasi faces three drunken driving related charges, including extreme DUI, for a July 2 incident in which she also was cited for speeding.

act_diana_taurasi

Taurasi’s blood-alcohol level was 0.17 percent, or more than twice the Arizona legal limit of 0.08 percent. She almost exceeded the amount as points (22) she scored that night. Nice work Diana!

This is her third, YES I said third DUI, and in return the WNBA flexed their muscles and gave her a 2 game suspension today. I assure you she will not be behind the wheel of a car for about as long as Donte Stallworth.

By the way it’s Diana Taurasi Day against the San Antonio Silver Stars on August 1st and beer is only a buck so bring the kids!

HAPPY 4th Timmy Chang!

Does the name Timmy Chang ring a bell for any of you college football fans? Chang from Hawaii was only one of the most productive quarterbacks to ever play the game in college, but like most quarterbacks from a “system” he never produced in the NFL. I’m not real sure what he is up to these days, but I do know he has been arrested on suspicion of robbery. Timmy was arrested from his home after a woman alleged her camera was taken away while she was filming a fight last month in Hawaii.

p1_changSupposively Chang told the woman to stop filming the fight which led to a struggle before Chang took the camera from the woman and threw it on the roof of a neighboring building. Chang has not been able to be reached for comment yet and I don’t suspect he will be until this blows over.

One of the best in boxing is found dead

Former boxing champion Alexis Arguello, one of the best junior lightweights to ever step in the ring, was found dead at his home early Wednesday. The La Prensa newspaper reported Arguello was found with a gunshot wound to the chest and the rumors are starting to swirl around whether his death was a suicide attempt. Arguello previously discussed with Sports Illustrated in 1985 that he had considered suicide to escape feelings of betrayal and despair and there have been reports recently he had been battling serious bouts with depression.

Before Arguello no one had ever won the title in three different weight divisions. Arguello even moved up again in weight in 1982 to challenge junior welterweight figther Aaron Pryor in a tilt titled as the “Battle of the Champions.” Over 20,000 fans poured into the Orange Bowl to see an epic brawl that ultimately led to Pryor knocking out Arguello in the 14th round which today would be unheard of for boxers to go so many rounds. Arguello is one of the classiest fighters to ever step foot into the ring due to his upstanding character and demeanor. Rest in peace Alexis!

Nuff said, Lakers are World Champs

As I predicted, the Los Angeles Lakers won the NBA Finals in five games and it wasn’t nearly as close as the media tried to make it. All hail the Lakers and don’t be surprised if they are back in the Finals again next year. Yes they have some questions on whether to keep Odom or not and they will undoubtedly take a look at the free agent pool this offseason, but with Gasol and Kobe still at the top of their game and the unlimited potential Bynum has this could be another dynasty for the Lakers.

BREAKING NEWS! Yanks Get Strasburg…Umm Not

The MLB Draft is today and the foregone conclusion is that the Nationals will use the first overall pick on Stephen Strasburg. Most years, there is a consensus overall top pick so one might think that with the 44 years of the draft there would be several Hall of Famers go as the first overall pick, but that isn’t the case. Until Ken Griffey Jr. and Chipper Jones retire and wait five years, we will not have one single player with that distinction to date. Speaking of distinctio, Chipper Jones was the quickest #1 Overall Pick to make it to the World Series (5 years) and then surpassed last year by Tampa Bay’s 2007 #1 pick David Price.

steven_strasburg09On the other side of the coin, some people think that the first overall pick has turned out to be a bust just as often as not, but is it fair to consider someone like Tim Foli or Bill Almon, who played 15 and 16 years in the majors, respectively, busts? Teams usually end up getting a solid major league player at the top slot of the draft, even if they do not always end up landing the “best” player.

Strasburg is widely believed to be the most outstanding amateur pitching prospect in history. Videos and eyewitness accounts reveal a right-hander throwing 103-mph fastballs and unhittable curves. He’s the real thing, no question; some of the quotes from veteran scouts are so outrageously giddy, it sounds as if they just returned from Mars. That being said, he isn’t worth $10 million any more than any other player in the history of the draft because he hasn’t done anything in the bigs.  The only problem is that with Scott Boras as his agent he will be asking for $50 million and will Washington even be able to sign him? What? Cant Washington trade the pick? Nope! Even a prospect like Strasburg is not without risk, and the Nationals could be sinking a lot of money into a failed investment.  They cannot even draft and trade him, as teams must wait one year to trade any player they have drafted.  Is this the ideal situation for the Nationals? Of course not.  I think the New York Yankees or Boston Red Sox would give the Nats a king’s ransom for the right to draft Strasburg.  This package of prospects would help the Nationals rebuild their 21st ranked farm system, and would also make sense financially.

Baseball would benefit from the increased exposure of the new draft.  The Canadian media is having a field day penning articles regarding whether or not the Toronto Maple Leafs will be able to pry the second overall pick from the Tampa Bay Lightning in order to draft Ontario Hockey League superstar John Tavares.  The same would happen in baseball.

It would also give small-budget teams the opportunity to make educated decisions regarding what is best for their franchise.  They could make a trade to benefit their team now or build the farm system, rather than being forced to draft a top talent that they have to make an immediate multi-millionaire.

The Draft needs to be refined as well as provide a cap ala the NBA as this can only get out of hand moving forward.

Here are the Top 10 Worst Draft Picks:

10. Paul Wilson  – dogged by shoulder and elbow injuries that robbed him of most of his career

9. Matt Anderson – could throw 100 mph, ended up tearing a muscle in his throwing arm when he participated in an octopus throwing contest at Comerica Park

8. Shawn Abner – 1984 U.S. Olympic team finished with a lifetime .227 avg

7. Danny Goodwin – In 1971 turned down $60K to go to Southern Univ again the #1 in ’75 and blew his arm out as a catcher never hit in the pros

107x150-images-stories-danny-goodwin6. Bryan Bullington – the top overall pick in the 2002 draft to Pitt currently sits with an 0-5 record with a 5.08 ERA in 13 games

5. Al Chambers – Signed for $60,000 as a cant miss power hitter.. but played only 57 games in parts of three seasons, amassed just two home runs and a .208 average in 120 at-bats.

4. David Clyde – this story is a beauty… his senior year in high school, he went 18-0 with 14 shutouts and he established a high school record with 328 strikeouts. He was the first HS pitcher drafted with the first overall pick when the Rangers took him in 1973. Just 19 days after graduating high school, he was pitching in the majors. Clyde won his first start, became a gate attraction for the struggling Rangers (just two years after the move from Washington) and Texas kept him in the majors even though he was not ready. The following year, Billy Martin replaced Whitey Herzog as the team’s manager and he thought Clyde belonged in the minors. When the front office refused to ship him out, Clyde went 31 days without not only pitching in a game, but even warming up on the sidelines. Clyde lost his curveball, ended up having two shoulder surgeries and had problems with alcohol. He finished his career in the majors with an 18-33 mark with a 4.63 ERA.

3. Brien Taylor – Good ol’ Brien with an ‘E’ from Beaufort, North Carolina..#1 pick in 1991 and while in AA ball with a 13-7 record got into a fight after his older brother got roughed up and wrecked his shoulder. BTW Manny was the 13th pick.

2. Steve Chilcott – Mets took him over Reggie Jackson and signed for a $75,000 bonus. Chilcott never made the majors

1. Matt Bush – No relation to the ex prezes – he received a hefty $3,150,000 bonus. Bush was suspended by the Padres before he even played a game for an altercation outside a club. He hit poorly for two seasons, broke an ankle, converted to pitching, injured his elbow, got into alcohol-related trouble, was dealt to Toronto and finally was released this year before the season for violating the Blue Jays’ zero tolerance behavior policy. Best first-round picks that season: Justin Verlander (2nd), Jered Weaver (12th), Stephen Drew (15th).

The Lakers Missing Link is a DJ

When the Lakers take the floor tonight in search of their 15th World Championship I expect them to throw the kitchen sink at Dwight Howard especially after Phil Jackson’s comments a couple months ago when he stated he would rather have Howard on his team instead of LeBron James. The key to the series is to not allow Howard to score inside the paint and to force him out of the key where he is not nearly as dominate. Phil will have three seven-footers to throw at the beast known as Dwight Howard. Yes, there is a third Laker above 7-foot. His Delta Chi name is D.J. Mbenga. act_dj_mbenga Mbenga has only played in 23 games this year and is averaging 2.7 points a game and 1.3 rebounds. Needless to say he hasn’t been an integral part of the Lakers squad, but that will all change in this series. Mbenga’s greatest achievements to date happened back in the 2006 playoffs. D.J. played for the Dallas Mavericks and Avery Johnson’s wife was being disturbed by some fans and Mbenga reportedly went into the stands with owner Mark Cuban to help usher Mrs. Johnson to the locker room. Because of this ace he was ultimately suspended for 6 games without pay for entering the stands.

So, to wrap things up I think the missing link in the Finals coming to you by way of the Congo and now pimping a Laker jersey is D.J. Mbenga. Between Gasol, Bynum and Mbenga they will have plenty of fouls to put Dwight Howard on the line where he hits a paltry 55%.

My prediction is the Lakers in five because they have the big bodies that Cleveland didn’t have to throw at Howard.

Lakers must get rid of the garbage to be the best…

The Los Angeles Lakers are said to have the best talent in the NBA, but I don’t know why people are saying this when they have stiffs like Lamar Odom, Luke Walton and Sasha Vujacic on their squad. As Charles Barkley would say, “these guys are Turrrrable.” Not to belabor the point but has anyone noticed that Derrick Fisher is old and can’t even shoot anymore?

The Lakers have only 4 players averaging over 10 points per game and with Lamar averaging only 11 points while sinking free throws at a 53% clip the big 4 is about as cheap as the Clippers top talent.

Sasha whose claim to fame is shooting from behind the arc is averaging a mere 37% from downtown and sadly enough this is actually much better than his 27% shooting from inside the arc. Vujacic is averaging a total of 3 points per game with 0 assists plus no free throw attempts other than a technical foul in Game 4 which he missed.

73920313LB007_Los_Angeles_LNow lets move on to Luke Walton because this guy is tanking his father’s legacy with every game he plays. Luke is averaging a mere 3 points per game, shooting 33%, grabbing a whopping 2 boards per game, and not even getting the free throw line on average once a game.

When only 3 of your starters are averaging 10 points or more a game and the bench is not producing then it is no wonder why Kobe is taking more shots and there is dissention among the team around ball distribution.

The key to Game 5 is easy if the Lakers will rebound plus Fisher and BYNUM come to play. Can anyone wake up this immature fool? Andrew Bynum was considered at one time this year a potential All-Star until a freak accident left him hobbled for most of the second half of the season, but c’mon. He is letting Chris ‘Bird Man’ Anderson and Nene kick his butt up and down the court.

If the Lakers don’t win the rebound edge tonight then it is game over and series over. Hope you have a nice day on the golf course with Lebron boys.

Ernie Davis is rolling over in his grave

Greg Paulus has decided to return to his home to play football with Syracuse.

Yes, Im not kidding! The former Duke point guard will enroll in graduate school at Syracuse and try to make a comeback in football for the Orangemen.  I can see it now…Jim Brown will be having a press conference on how this is somewhat racially motivated.

paulusThe decision ends a month of speculation whether the one-time star high school quarterback from Syracuse would resume his football career.

Lets see.. over the last 3 months he worked out for the NFL, Michigan and now after Duke.. uh ha.. Duke said no Paulus ended up choosing a program gasping for air.

Maybe its because he feels comfortable paying in domes? Or he just likes the color of Orange? Whatever the reason this is a slap in the face for a once hallowed program. Hey UCLA needs someone Greggy!

Magic vs Bird?..not even close

So you have the 2 best NHL players in Alex Ovechkin versus Sidney Crosby vying against each other in the playoffs in what is essentially the NHL’s Championship series albeit the Eastern Conference Semis and nobody cares.

The great game 6 matchup drew a 1.2 share which equates to ESPN’s College Bowling Championships.

4 years ago when ESPN tried to halt the NHL Players strike they intervened and made a statement of, ‘If you dont stop by this X date we will revoke your TV contract.”  Well the smart Players Association did not take heed and in turn lost fans, marketshare and of course the best TV vehicle on the planet.

Now and for the last 4 years the VS Network has carried these games along with the local FOX Sports outlets and a weekend game, in the mid-afternoon, on NBC while the other channels have PGA/Tiger Woods, MLB or Womens Beach Volleyball during those afternoon slots.

Dont get me wrong cause Playoff hockey eh is the best playoff sport on the planet next to NFL, but dont feel sorry for the NHL because they dug this hole themselves and have not apologized to the Sports God (ESPN) for thier wayward thinking.

Manny pulls a booner..literally

According  to Yahoo Sports.

A source close to Manny Ramirez said Thursday that the illegal substance for which the Los Angeles Dodgers slugger tested positive was not “an agent customarily used for performance enhancing.”

At least not on the baseball diamond. The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the substance is supposed to boost sex drive. It is not Viagra, but a substance that treats the cause rather providing a temporary boost in sexual performance, the source said.

Ramirez, the source said, acquired the substance through a prescription from a doctor in Miami for his medical condition. The source intimated that Ramirez might bring legal action against the physician.
