Unreal Hockey Goal

Check out this goal by future NHL star John Tavares because it might be one of the best you ever see!

Canada and Hockey are BFF

I’m sure most everyone is already knee deep in their NHL fantasy seasons, but for those who aren’t aware the NHL has started another season. It actually kicked off last weekend in Prague, Czechoslovakia (nice call NHL brass) but officially kicked off in the states and Canada this past Thursday. Check out the clip below to see the extent Canadiens will go to celebrate another hockey season. I have to admit it is one really cool billboard!

What is ESPN Without Barry Melrose?

Barry Melrose

This is a question that will be answered when we enter the fall of 2008. Barry “Metrosexual Mullet” Melrose has been hired as the new head coach of the Tampa Bay Lightning so he will no longer be in studio with ESPN. Melrose has been ESPN’s hockey analyst for over 12 years and in my opinion is one of the most well known ESPN heads even if you don’t like hockey. Melrose did have success while coaching in the early 90’s with the Los Angeles Kings. He went to the Stanley Cup Finals in his first season with LA, but only coached three years total for the Kings. Anyone want to bet Brett Hull will take over for Melrose at ESPN?

Richard Zednik Slices His Neck in NHL Game

Richard Zednik of the Florida Panthers is very lucky to be alive after his carotid artery was cut by his teammate’s skate last night in a game against the Buffalo Sabres. The video clip shows how this freak hockey accident happened and how quickly officials had to react to save Zednik’s life.

The Mighty Ducks

Anaheim Mighty Ducks

Since probably no one saw it live I thought I would make sure everyone knew the Anaheim Mighty Ducks won the Stanley Cup last night. Anaheim worked the Ottawa Senators all series and won the series 4-1. A few key notes to mention from the series: the Mighty Ducks have been in the league for 14 years, the Cup will reside in a western home for the first time ever, and a team from Canada hasn’t won the Cup since Montreal did in 1993.

Chris Simon Suspended

Chris SimonThe New York Islanders forward has been suspended for a league-record 25 games.  Simon laid a brutal two-handed slash to Ryan Hollweg’s head of the New York Rangers.  The video clip below displays just how blatant this head hunt was by Simon.  Well done NHL execs because you got this right.

Tkachuk to Thrashers

Keith Tkachuk

The Atlanta Thrashers made a huge pick up before the NHL trading deadline last night with the St. Louis Blues.  Atlanta gets veteran forward Keith Tkachuk in return for sending St. Louis forward Glen Metropolit, first round pick in 2007 and two other draft picks down the road.  Atlanta is currently sixth in the Eastern Conference, but four teams are within two points so this addition could be huge for the Thrashers.

Weird Moments in Sports

Hockey goalie mooning

A USC hockey goalie finally had enough of the refs in his game against BYU. The goalie “was riding his hockey stick like a horse and slapping his butt.” WTF???? He also mooned the crowd and eventually was booted from the game and ticketed with a misdemeanor. This is so crazy I can’t focus on my true feelings, but I think they are telling me he should never be allowed to play a college game again.

Sabres Stampede Continues

Buffalo SabresThe Buffalo Sabres are on FIRE to start the 2006-07 NHL season. They extended their team record to nine straight wins to start the season and are within one victory of tying the 10 straight wins the Toronto Mapleleafs achieved in the 1993-94 season. The Sabres play in Long Island this Thursday against the 3-3-2 New York Islanders with a chance to tie the NHL record.  Last night Chris Drury scored his tenth goal of the season in the 4-1 vicotry over the Montreal Canadiens. It’s definitely early in the season, but Buffalo at this time looks like they are really hungry to win a Stanley Cup.

Oilers Are A Bunch of Pansies

While getting their ass handed to them on Wed. night, the Oilers self destructed, and decided to be a bunch of thugs instead of playing hockey. I wanted the Canes to win the series, but now, I want them to walk them with authority in games 3 and 4, just like they are tonight. If the Oilers would play hockey, instead of wasting their energy headhunting, they might not have been embarassed in such a fashion. Have a nice trip back to Canada losers.
