Deceased Man Might Win $150K on Tennis Wager

A gentleman named Nick Newlife, who died in February 2009, placed a little over $2300 in ’03 on the notion that Roger Federer would win seven Wimbledon titles before 2019. Federer won his first Grand Slam title in 2003. Newlife actually made a stipulation that his winnings should go to the charity organization Oxfam if he wasn’t around to cash in the ticket. The charity would earn over $156K if Fed wins at Wimbledon. Most oddsmakers have Federer at +225 with only Rafael Nadal ahead of him at +200.

Sharapova Soon to Be Off the Market

Tennis star Maria Sharapova and Laker guard Sasha Vujagic have announced they are engaged. Vujagic made the engagement public before his preseason game last night against Golden State. He said he popped the question at his home on the one-year anniversary of meeting Maria at a friend’s barbecue. Obviously Sasha is a VERY lucky man because Sharapova is currently number two on the Top 14 SU.com Sports Babes list. Hat tip Sasha and we wish you two love birds the very best.

Congrats Caroline

Caroline Wozniacki defeated Nadia Petrova 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 yesterday in the Pilot Pen Tennis finals in New Haven, Connecticut. Wozniacki won her fourth title of the year and has won three out of the last four tournaments on the tour. She is definitely one of the favorites to win the 2010 US Open that gets underway tomorrow.

While that is exciting stuff we actually think pictures of Caroline are a lot more interesting. Enjoy!

Sharapova Interlude

Miss Maria advanced to the second round of the French Open after defeating qualifier Ksenia Pervak 6-3, 6-2 earlier today. Sharapova is ranked #12 in this year’s tournament and her best finish at Roland-Garros was the semifinals in 2007. Good luck Maria!

Simona Halep Has Done the Deed

A little over a month ago we broke the tragic news that Simona Halep was considering having a breast reduction. Halep stated it was necessary to reduce her 34DD breasts in order to improve her overall tennis game. I’m guessing everyway she turned those mamma jamma’s just kept getting in the way. Today I sadly bring you the unfortunate news that Halep has carried out her threat and has gone through with the breast reduction. Halep has made a full recovery and is already back on the court training. Let’s all please take a moment to stop and pour a bit of our beer out for our lost homies.

Fedtastic

Is Roger Federer the best tennis player to ever play the game? The argument has been brewing for a couple of years now and it will surely become more contentious considering today he broke the all-time Grand Slam titles mark previously held by Pete Sampras. Federer outlasted Andy Roddick 5-7, 7-6 (6), 7-6 (5), 3-6, 16-14 today in the Wimbledon Finals to set the record. In my mind there should be no argument because Federer is by far the best tennis player ever and that should be the end of the discussion. The man is only 27 years old and has won a record breaking 15 Grand Slam titles in his career not to mention he also previously held the world #1 ranking for a record 237 consecutive weeks. If that isn’t enough then also consider Federer has reached the semifinals, or better, in the last 21 consecutive Grand Slam tournaments which is a record streak spanning over a fiver year period. On this topic it is best to accept greatness rather than fight it!

Maria, Maria

As we discussed less than a month ago Maria Sharapova seems to be regaining her old form coming off a shoulder injury suffered last year and we couldn’t be happier. Well, today Maria hit a minor speed bump against #72 ranked Viktoriya Kutuzova, but she was able to gut out a first round win in two sets 7-5, 6-4. Sharapova will next face #45 ranked Gisela Dulko out of Argentina and we are expecting a more polished game from Maria.

Serena Ready for Wimbledon

Serena Williams won her first round Wimbledon match today against #154th ranked Neuza Silva 6-1, 7-5. By the looks of this picture taken recently while she was out training Serena has her eyes set on a possible third Wimbledon championship. As a side note, is it just me or is Serena looking more and more like Ben Wallace each day?

Sharapova Looking Sharp

Maria Sharapova the #2 SportsUnderground Sports Babe is looking like her old self in her first major of 2009 at the French Open. Sharapova was the number one women’s tennis player in 2005, but due to injuries and possibly a lack of focus she has fallen to her current rank of #102 in the world. Coming into the French Open Sharapova had only played 3 matches all year, but she seems to have shaken off the rust at Roland-Garros over the last week. Maria has beaten two players ranked in the top 25 in the world and has advanced to the quarterfinals to face 20th ranked Dominika Cibulkova. We would like nothing more than to see Sharapova win her second French Open title, but it won’t be easy because if she can get by Cibulkova then she will more than likely face Dinara Safina the number one women’s tennis player in the world.

Simona Halep Just Broke My Heart

SportsUnderground Sports Babe Simona Halep as we have previously mentioned is an upcoming women’s tennis star who has all the potential in the world. That is all good and well, but there is news out now that Halep thinks her 34DD chest is holding back her tennis abilities. “This fall I’ll have a breast reduction operation,” Simona said. “The breasts make me uncomfortable when I play.” Those could be the two saddest sentences I have ever read back-to-back. Let’s hope Simona Halep comes to her senses and changes her mind on the possible reduction.
