New Orleans Saints Super Bowl XLIV Champs

That’s right, the Saints will be the champs if you believe in video game predictions. Each year EA Sports simulates the Super Bowl via Madden NFL and believe it or not the simulated winner has ultimately won five of the last six years. This year’s victor is the N’awlins Saints which is quite surprising when you consider most of the media is all over Peyton Manning’s johnson and the Colts. The only prediction Madden NFL missed in the last six years was the Giants victory over the Patties which was one of the bigger upsets in the history of the NFL.

The simulation has the Saints winning 35-31 with Drew Brees winning the MVP after throwing three touchdowns for 299 yards. Brees competition Peyton Manning has a typical Manning game also throwing for three touchdowns plus 322 yards

If this prediction comes true then Bourbon Street could truly experience the absolute biggest party ever held in the French Quarter.

Mauer Leaning Towards Remaining a Twin

Minnesota is waiting with eager anticipation on whether or not a star will remain in his home state. The ridiculously talented 2009 AL MVP catcher Joe Mauer could very well be on his way to becoming the most loved athlete in the history of the state of Minnesota if the rumors are true. Reports indicate Mauer is close to signing a ten-year deal with the Minnesota Twins which in this day and time of MLB is rather amazing. Normally players of Mauer’s talent would head to the Yankees or Red Sox, but the three-time AL batting champion seems content staying home. If the negotiations happen to break down it will be an all out hysteria to see who can acquire the best catcher in all of baseball and outside of Pujols the best overall player in MLB.

The Big Dance Could Be Getting Bigger

The NCAA rumor mill has churned out a juicy morsel and it will be interesting to see if it actually turns out to be true. Sources have stated it’s a “done deal” that the NCAA basketball tournament will be even bigger and badder than the current 65-team field and it could happen as quickly as next year. The expansion will result in either a 68-team event or an eye-popping 96-team tournament. The NCAA supposedly is going to make the move in order to sign a long lucrative contract with a network or host of networks and 96 teams makes the tournament even more appealing. Currently the NCAA has three years left on their contract worth $2.131 billion, but they do have the ability to opt-out before August 31st.

If the tournament does expand to 96 teams it really concerns me on a few fronts. First and foremost, it would drastically dilute the field and allow some real dogs to make the tournament that don’t deserve to be there and won’t have a shot at winning the championship. Secondly, I’m concerned the expanded field will really take away from the regular season. Currently you need to be on your game every night or you won’t be enjoying the thrill of playing on national TV in the middle of March. If they allow another 32 teams in you will without a doubt see teams take nights off in the regular season yet still make the Big Dance with a 17-13 record. Also if the NCAA is going to extend the tournament even more, which will cause players to miss more class, how can it continue to justify not having a college football playoff?

ManCrunch Commercial Nixed

CBS has renounced a Super Bowl ad for a gay dating site called ManCrunch stating it wasn’t up to their “broadcast standards.” In a prepared statement the network said, “After reviewing the ad — which is entirely commercial in nature — our Standards and Practices department decided not to accept this particular spot.” They added that it “is not within the Network’s Broadcast Standards for Super Bowl Sunday.” I think the website should be thanking their lucky stars it was rejected because now they get to keep the $2+ million it costs to air a commercial during the Super Bowl while garnering all sorts of media attention. Here is the commercial in all its glory.

Goodbye Gilbert

David Stern made the announcement today, one many have been waiting for since December, that Gilbert Arenas has been suspended for the rest of the NBA season. This was supposively at the request of Gilbert and the word is he will ask the union not to fight his suspension. The suspension will cost Arenas nearly $10 million of his $16.2 million salary this year. Gilbert is playing this up pretty well because we all know the only reason he is asking to be suspended for the year is so he can avoid being suspended for an even longer term. When Arenas decided to bring unlicensed guns into the NBA workplace he made a gigantic mistake. When he later made jokes about his mistake and even mimicked the act of shooting guns with his hands in a pre-game huddle he showed complete lack of remorse. It is still up in the air if Gilbert will play out the remaining $80+ million contract with the Wizards or if the organization will void his contract. I think the Wizards decision on to void or not to void will come down to whether or not Gilbert is senteced to jail time. On a separate note Javaris Crittenton who was the other teammate involved in “gun gate” has also been suspended for the rest of the season by the NBA.

College Basketball Bets of the Day – January 27th, 2010

Michigan State didn’t cover last night in Ann Arbor and the Spartans almost lost the game straight up. Kentucky finally showed their youth at South Carolina which led to their first loss of the year in large part due to the spectacular play of Devan Downey. Overall we were 2-2 for the evening and we plan on getting more than two wins tonight. Good luck!

Terrence Cody’s Sweater Stretchers

I know lineman have to be bigger than life and eat 5,000 calories or more a day to keep the weight up, but does anyone think Terrence Cody has taken this notion a bit far? Dude has a bigger rack than Roseanne Barr and he doesn’t seem to have any defined muscle on his body. Yes, he could beat me to a pulp in two seconds or less, but come on man!

Lane Kiffin’s Arrogance is Despicable

Lane Kiffin has been with USC for all of two weeks yet he has already found enough time to commit a recruiting violation. According to reports from several sources the new head coach of USC decided to pick up a recruit recently from the airport in a limo. While it is only a secondary violation it is just another example that Lane Kiffin thinks he is untouchable. During his reign as head coach of the Tennessee Volunteers the football program reported SIX secondary violations and the NCAA is looking into two other possible violations. I’m still amazed this joker is regarded as a top notch coach when you consider how poorly he did with the Raiders and was only 7-6 with the Volunteers. If he didn’t surround himself with the highest paid college coaching staff in the nation it wouldn’t take long at all to find out Lane is a complete fraud. I hope USC is happy with their choice now because I don’t think the happiness will last very long.
