Calipari Reloads

Yesterday John Calipari started to rebuild his empire at Kentucky with the commitment of point guard Brandin Knight who is regarded by most as the best player in the 2010 class. This commitment wasn’t too much of a surprise, but the news of small forward Michael Gilchrist (the best player in the class of 2011) committing to the Wildcats on the same day was a shocker. These two studs will definitely follow in the same foot steps as previous Calipari ‘playas’ like John Wall, Tyreke Evans, and Derrick Rose by jumping ship after one year in college. Other uncommitted rising stars like Josh Selby (guard) and C.J. Leslie (forward) very well could commit to Kentucky in the coming days which could instantly bring the university back to a national prominence this coming year. Let’s face it, if you are a guard (or small forward) and have aspirations of playing in the NBA then hook up with Calipari and dribble-drive your way to the promise land. I know it’s tough on these guys to grind their way through an entire semester of classes before heading to the NBA, but sometimes you have to suck it up to succeed.

Prince Fielder Wants to Get Paid

Scott Boras is up to his typical antics and this time it’s centered on his pending free agent client Prince Fielder. Boras and Fielder are looking for a $200 million contract this offseason which would make him the highest paid player in the bigs outside of Alex Rodriguez. I understand Prince is only 25-years old and was only behind Pujols in homeruns and OPS+ in the National League, but the man is the size of a sumo wrestler. He is 5’11 and is ‘listed’ at 270 pounds, but there isn’t a day since he was called up by the Brewers that he weighed 270. The weight issues may have not affected his weight yet, but it’s inevitable it will and it will start to happen sooner rather than later. His weight places a lot of strain on muscles and joints and over time it will lead to his body breaking down. Mo Vaughn and Cecil Fielder are two examples of large baseball players who were basically out of the league by the time they reached 30 and they were taller and weighed a lot less than Prince. I highly doubt in the end the Brewers will even be in the discussion of wanting to pay Prince a pile of money so they should just sit back and laugh when the Mets decide to sign him.

MLB Bets of the Day – April 13th, 2010

So far so good this Major League Baseball season. The Rockies are 44-19 in their last 63 games and the A’s seem to have the Mariners number so just do it. Good luck!

Rockies -150
A’s -125

Overall Record:

NBA 6-4 (2010) 50-40 (overall)
NHL 1-2
MLB 7-3 (2010) 97-72-5
College Football 37-24 (2009-10) 142-115-1 (overall)

Destitute Derrick Coleman

What is going on these days with former NBA players going bankrupt after making millions of dollars during their career? Antoine Walker and Latrell Sprewell are two perfect examples of players who poorly managed their wealth and then today comes the news that Derrick Coleman is flat broke. DC made more than $87 million throughout his NBA career yet he has filed for bankruptcy and owes creditors close to $5 million. He supposedly has roughly a million left in assets that include some jewelry, five fur coats, a 1997 Bentley convertible and two homes in the Beverly Hills. According to Coleman’s lawyer Derrick lost most of his fortune in Detroit real estate which probably wasn’t the best place to invest.
