Five for Federer

Roger Federer
Roger Federer won his fifth straight Wimbledon title today against Rafael Nadal. Federer ties the record of five in a row at Wimbledon set by Bjorn Bjorg in the 70’s. Even if you don’t like tennis you should take notice of what a huge star Roger Federer truly is in professional sports.

Maria lost today to Venus Williams at Wimbledon in the round of 16.  Sharapova could never get on track and lost in straight sets 6-1 6-3.  We still love ya Maria.

The New Tennis Hottie

Ana Ivanovic

Ana Ivanovic

One of our top 10 sports babes Maria Sharapova was smoked today at the French Open 6-2 6-1. The young lady who won is named Ana Ivanovic and is she a delight to look at or what? I can’t wait for the French Open ladies final tomorrow when she takes on Justin Henin. 🙂

American Disaster

The French Open

The American men set a ground breaking record this year at the French Open. They collectively went 0-9 in the first round in turn making this the first time in the Open era an American couldn’t make the second round of the French Open. I know clay gives us fits and the days of Jim Courier, Andre Agassi and Michael Chang are long gone, but this is embarassing. I included the full list of players below so feel free to throw rotten tomatoes or cabbage if the urge hits you.

No. 3-seeded Andy Roddick
No. 8 James Blake
Robby Ginepri
Vince Spadea
Justin Gimelstob
Amer Delic
Robert Kendrick
Sam Querrey
Michael Russell

The French Open 2007

Maria Sharapova

The tennis major of Roland-Garros kicked off today and that can mean only two things. Rafael Nadal will win the men’s side of things, but more importantly it means close to two weeks of Maria Sharapova. Woohoo! She almost looks as excited as we are here at SportsUnderground.

Federer Ends Nadal’s Clay Court Winning Streak

Roger Federer

Roger Federer won the 2007 Hamburg Open yesterday and more importantly ended Nadal’s 81 match winning streak on clay. Federer beat Nadal 2-6, 6-2, 6-0 to prove why he is the world’s number one player even with the stellar play Nadal has displayed over the last two years. This win by Federer is even more interesting with the French Open just around the corner where there is no doubt Nadal will be a contender for the title at Roland-Garros.

Nadal is Nasty

Rafael Nadal

Rafael Nadal broke the single surface wins in a row mark today with his 76th win in a row on clay. Nadal broke the record that John McEnroe held with 75 wins in a row on indoor carpet from the years of 1983-85. The win pushed Nadal into the finals of the Rome Open to face Fernando Gonzalez. Calle me whacky, but I think Nadal takes the championship tomorrow.

Lets not forget we are three weeks away from the French Open at Roland-Garros and Nadal will be the heavy favorite going into the big event since the surface is nothing other than clay.

Sharapova Needs a Hug

Maria Sharpova

Maria is no longer number one in the world in women’s tennis after being upset by Vera Zvonareva in the Pacific Life Open.  Sharapova was up 5-3 in the second set with a chance to close out, but instead lost the next eight games in a row.  I have a shoulder for you to cry on if you want Maria.

Roger Federer is Fantastic

Roger Federer

Federer has now been #1 in the world for over three years and 161 weeks. This breaks the longest streak ever in men’s professional tennis previoulsy held by Jimmy Connors. The most astounding part of this record is Federer is only 25 years old and shows no signs of slowing down. I don’t care if you even like tennis or not…this man is the shiznit!
