College Football Bet of the Day – November 24th, 2009

Tonight 1-10 Ball State travels to 5-6 Western Michigan in a typical Tuesday night MAC matchup. At first glance it looks like Ball State who is 1-4 on the road this year doesn’t have a chance, but if you look at how well they have been playing recently it could sway your opinion. The line is set at Western Mich by 11 which I don’t see happening. Look for the Cardinals get under that 11 and make this a close game and maybe even win.

Ball State +11

Overall Record:

College Football 32-21 (this year) 137-112-1 (overall)
NFL 28-12 (this year) 131-84-5 (overall)
MLB 90-69-5
College Basketball 197-149-6
NHL 1-2
NBA 44-36

Jimmy Clausen Got Knocked the F#%k Out

Notre Dame star quarterback Jimmy Clausen has reportedly suffered a shiner due to a punch after 2:00 AM Sunday Morning in South Bend, Indiana. No solid details have emerged yet, but I can only guess someone called his daddy Charlie Weis an oversized blowhole or it was a rabid Notre Dam fan taking out his frustration on Clausen for another disappointing year of football. This fight couldn’t come at a worse time if you consider all the drama currently surrounding the Fighting Irish. I’m sure there will be enough time for Clausen to heal, but the swelling will need to go down for him to play at Stanford this coming Saturday. I bet Jimmy is super ready to bounce out of Notre Dame and move on to the NFL and get that fat paycheck. The NFL will definitely cater to his primadonna attitude.

NFL Bets of the Day – November 22nd, 2009

We are just a few days away from Thanksgiving which always means the NFL starts to take real shape on who can make the playoffs and who cannot. This year there are several very bad teams so the pool of potential playoff teams is a bit smaller than normal. There are some very important games on the slate today so sit back and enjoy. Below are the picks and good luck.

Saints -10.5
Redskins +11
Eagles -3
Chargers -3

Overall Record:

College Football 32-21 (this year) 137-112-1 (overall)
NFL 24-12 (this year) 127-84-5 (overall)
MLB 90-69-5
College Basketball 197-149-6
NHL 1-2
NBA 44-36

Time to Take Your Ball and Go Home Charlie

Senior day in South Bend has been hit with an unforgiveable, appalling, disastrous loss for the second straight year under head coach Charlie Weis. UConn is obviously much better than the heavily underrated and flat out bad Syracuse squad that came into Notre Dame last year and took down the Irish. Notre Dame has now lost three games in a row during a time when everyone has been talking about how Charlie is in deep trouble and needs every win he can get. He has a winning percentage now that is worse than Bob Davie and Ty Willingham which doesn’t benefit Weis at all. In one way this is flat out embarrassing to Irish nation. In another way this will ultimately lead to total relief. The Charlie Weis era is officially done!

D2B College Football Pix Week 12

Well the bubble finally burst about as bad as Jamarcus Russell’s NFL career to date. After rolling the previous 4 weeks I had a worse day than a Dave Kingman Golden Sombrero. 0-4 was what I provided you last week and it wasn’t even close. I am still 15-8-2 over the past 5 weeks so let’s look at the glass half full.

Oklahoma St -17 v Colorado (Thursday)

#12 Ok State can not get to the Big 12 Championship due to their loss against Texas 3 weeks ago, but what they can do is win out and get themselves into a pretty big bowl game. Possibly a Holiday Bowl against the likes of Oregon, Stanford, USC or Oregon State in what could be the best non-BCS bowl of the year. The Cowboys are playing a disaster in Colorado where this will be the last year for head Coach Dan Hawkins. Ok State needs this win and again next week at rival Oklahoma to become one of the top 10 elite schools in the 2009 season even without Dez Bryant. Cowboys rank 32nd nationally in total defense, allowing 333.9 yards per game,  and seventh against the rush (89.6). As for turnovers, Oklahoma State still owns the plus-five mark it attained last season.

I am betting Oklahoma State -17 at home to cover

Tennessee -17 v Vanderbilt
lanekaffin5
After going 3-1 the previous 4 weeks heading into Mississippi including
a 12-10 loss to at that time #1 Alabama in Bama things were on the right
track for Lane Kiffin and the Vols. Then 3 players get arrested for armed robbery and that is the ball game. They got crushed in ‘Sippi the same week and now need to win 1 of 2 to get bowl eligible and this is their chance. They need to come out and beat an over matched Vandy team in Knoxville before closing out at Kentucky. The Commodores are 2-9 with wins against 1-9 Rice and 2-8 Western Carolina and are riding a 7-game losing streak.  If Vandy gets close the TU Boosters will have Kiffin’s head, but will keep Mrs. Kiffin as ambassador of football recruiting.

I am betting Tenn -17 at home to cover

Notre Dame -6 v UConn

I said last week that the Pitt game was Charlie’s Alamo and they lost. They did make an attempt to come back, but needed an 85-yd punt return
to cover the spread. Basically Pitt beat them up pretty good. ND has
to win this last game at home to satisfy some pundits because they will have zero chance next week at Stanford. UConn now has a few weeks under it’s belt after the death of a teammate and since that day have gone 0-3 but losses to Cinci, WVa and a hot Rutgers. They come
into South Bend with 2 weeks off and after dropping 45 at Cinci
while losing by 2 the problem is this may be Jimmy Clausen’s
and Weiss’s final home game. This is the game ND has to and will
win to save a little face. Their talented WR’s are healthy and JC
.. no. not that JC, but Clausen will throw for over 300 and the
Irish will cover easily.

I am betting Notre Dame -6 at home to cover

Texas -27.5 v Kansas

WOW, what a week for the Rock Chawk Jayhwak program. 450+lb
head coach Mark Mangino is under an internal review which has been
initiated by the KU athletic department to investigate a personnel
matter involving the eight-year coach. Published reports indicating
senior linebacker Arist Wright came forward and provided an account
of an incident with Mangino and mired in a 5-game losing streak
after winning the first 5 has only fueled the fire.  Oh about Texas. Since the Red River game in mid-Oct against the Sooners Texas has literally crushed their opponents and have a stranglehold on the Big 12 South and will beat whoever wins the Neb v Kansas St game in the Big 12 Championship. Also ranked #3 in the BCS and awaiting the game between the SEC’s best in 3 weeks can reasonably figure to be in the National Championship and potentially have a Heisman Trophy winner in Colt McCoy who is as hot as anyone in college football.

I am betting Texas -27.5 at home to cover

Latest SU.com College Football Poll – November 18th, 2009

Our latest poll has been updated and our top five is pretty similar overall compared to the main national polls. The big difference is we were on the TCU and Georgia Tech train well before others and we still aren’t that impressed with Cincy overall. Stanford, Pittsburgh, Wisconsin and Clemson are the big risers this week. If you have thoughts on our poll feel free to speak up.

Nelly Going Back to School

A little birdie has told me that a fraternity from the University of South Carolina has booked the rapper Nelly to perform at a party following the Clemson-South Carolina football game next weekend. I’m not trying to call Nelly out, but it seems he has fallen pretty hard from his performance at the Super Bowl a few years ago if he is willing to take on a frat party in Columbia, South Carolina. Now I know it’s a big rivalry and all, but it isn’t the biggest live event in the world now is it? Anyone in agreement with me that all he will do is lip synch a couple of songs and then hit the road?

Larry Johnson to Visit the Bengals

Reports are emerging that former Chief running back Larry Johnson is going to visit with the Cincinnati Bengals in the coming days. Lewis did confirm the Bengals will be talking with Johnson, but if they did sign him it would only be for a backup role and Johnson would actually be fourth on the depth chart. I guess Lewis felt it was important to make this point considering Cedric Benson the starting running back was hurt yesterday against the Steelers and it is unclear at this time if he will be able to play this weekend against the Oakland Raiders. I know the Bengals are having an excellent year (so good I’m not calling them the Bungles currently), but do they really need another bad character in that locker room? You can rest assured if Johnson does sign with the Bengals it will no doubt be time to pop some champagne.

NFL Bet of the Day – November 16th, 2009

This will probably be the lowest rated Monday Night Football game of the year since the Cleveland Browns are part of the matchup against the Baltimore Ravens. The one redeeming factor is Brady Quinn will be starting again so that might help spark a bit of interest.

Ravens -10.5
