Bruce Carter Super Sized

UNC Tar Heels outside linebacker Bruce Carter is rated the number-one player in his position by many scouting sites heading into his senior season. Carter is a complete specimen considering he can bench 440 pounds, has a 40 ½ vertical and can run a 4.39 40 at 6’3 240 pounds. “Bruuuuuce” can be seen regularly running the Keenan Stadium steps with 60-pound bags of cement on him so he must have an incredible diet. Well, that is what one would think, but Bruce recently divulged what is included in is daily diet regimen. “I eat a lot of McDonald’s and fast foods, but I do work out real hard … Almost every day. I usually get three double cheeseburgers, medium fries, large tea and a six-piece McNuggets. I don’t think eating healthy as far as eating salads and that stuff really works for me.”

I personally don’t know how long the Super Size Me diet will work for Bruce, but I’m pretty sure no one is complaining in Chapel Hill right now. Carter, DT Marvin Austin, DE Robert Quinn, ILB Quan Sturdivant, FS Deunta Williams and CB Kendrick Burney are by far the best defense in the ACC and quite possibly the best in the NCAA.

USC Penalties – Update

The NCAA has not been fooled and thus they have really come down hard on the USC Athletic Department.

The findings of the NCAA investigation found issues with not only Reggie Bush, but basketball player OJ Mayo and an unnamed women’s tennis player.

• A postseason ban in football following this season and next.

• A loss of 30 total football scholarships over the 2011, 2012 and 2013 seasons.

• A vacation of all football victories starting in December 2004 and running through the 2005 season. This includes the National Championship win over Oklahoma on January 4th, 2005.

• An acceptance of USC’s self-imposed penalties on its basketball program, which included a forfeiture of all wins in 2007-2008 and a one-year postseason ban.

• All statistics vacated for Bush, Mayo and an unnamed women’s tennis athlete in the games which the NCAA deemed them ineligible due to rules violations.

• All titles won during ineligible games must be vacated and trophies and banners must be removed.

• Bush and Mayo must be disassociated from USC athletics.

• A forfeiture of wins in the women’s tennis program from May 2006 to May 2009, for long-distance telephone violations committed by an athlete.

• A reduction of recruiting days for the men’s basketball program in 2010-2011.

• Four years of probation

USC Finally Gets Their Penalty

These days living in and around Los Angeles doesn’t suck. The Dodgers and Angels are in first place in their respective divisions, the Lakers are up 2-1 in the NBA Finals, and the USC Trojans just got a near death penalty on their football program. The penalty includes a 2-year ban on bowl games, 30 lost scholarships, and their 2004 undefeated season will be forfeited along with their wins from 2005.  As a UCLA Bruin loyalist nothing could be sweeter than to see the grim reaper show up on the Trojans doorstep.  Oh, this has nothing to do with OJ Mayo and the basketball program so I will await those disciplines too.

We all knew the hammer from the NCAA was going to fall it was just a question of when.  Reggie Bush’s constant denial of his family receiving in upwards of $300k in gifts from naive agents that ultimately sued him was a huge red flag. To make it worse Reggie ended up on the first day of the trial giving the agents back their $300k and not saying a word which really smelled fishy.  It was about time this out of control program was dinged for improprieties that were happening.  Why it took so long is an anomaly since we are now in the fourth year of the investigation.

I do have sympathy for this year’s freshman class because they now have to go out on the field everyday knowing they will not see any fruits of their hard work for the next two years.  Sure USC will be able to be seen on TV against the Irish, Bruins and others, but even if they go 12-0 they can’t win a NCAA Championship.  Look for UCLA, and potentially new PAC 10 members Texas and Oklahoma to split the 30 recruits that would have gone to USC and gain a competitive advantage over the Trojans going into the proposed realigned conference.

Yes indeed, this is a beautiful day.

Where is College Football Going?

With all the talk about the Big Ten becoming the Big 14, the SEC stealing some ACC schools just after the big ACC merger a few years ago along with the whispers of realignment of the Pac 10 which could become the Pac 12 I start to wonder just WTF is going on?

Earlier this week it was rumored the Big Ten had offered membership to four schools: Notre Dame, Nebraska, Missouri and Rutgers. The ACC is looking anxiously at the Big Ten expansion because it could set off a chain of events that one day affects the ACC with regards to Bowl games and the money those games generate for the ACC. Already losing the Gator Bowl this year the ACC is scheduled to have three New Years Eve games which we all know is nothing monetarily in comparison to the January 1st games.

The big loser in all of this would be the Big East.. They could lose up to 4 maybe 5 teams out of a conference still looking for an identity after losing Miami, Va Tech and BC to the ACC a few years back. They have added Louisville, Cinci and UConn which are nice schools, but only in basketball are they a marquis brand. Losing a Rutgers, UConn, Syracuse and Pitt would be devastating for the league considering that football is the big purse that allows for the other sports to survive.

As far as the Pac 10, they plan to hire super agency CAA to find out if what they want to do is a viable solution for the league, Geesh, so SoCal it makes me want to puke and I live here. You don’t need an agency to conduct studies and get paid millions to come up with the answer because the answer is to EXPAND you Idiots! Get BYU and Utah or raid the wo-be-gones from the Big 12 like Colorado and Kansas and expand the brand into the middle of the country. Basketball as well as football would be affected in a positive manner. Every year 2 of the most storied programs (KU and UCLA) could play in hoops in a home-and-home. Sounds better than Utah vs UCLA or BYU vs Oregon State, right? Whatever they do I hope they do it fast! Knowing how the Pac 10 purists handle emerging ideas I say that the conference will still be in the same boat 5 years from now, but maybe with a Pac-10 and Big 12 partnership — NOT a merger — to maximize TV opportunities.

And finally the SEC. One of the most popular scenarios right now is for the SEC, Big Ten, ACC and Pac-10 to expand and form four super-conferences by absorbing teams from the Big East and Big 12. Ya right, and we will have a college football playoff to boot! Anyway, the SEC is looking at grabbing South Carolina rival Clemson as well as Miami and Fla St out of the ACC to create a super duper conference. Maybe ESPN can start a new network called ESPN-SEC and throw in Tim Tebow as their lead analyst.

In any case all these adjustments are leading to what we may all want. These super conferences happen and let the winners of the conferences play in a 3 game tourny where we would have a semi-final and a final to at least give us some sort of playoff system to crown the absolute champion.

It would definitely be better than what we have now!

Penn State Home Games Pack a Punch

Penn State football fans consistently make Beaver Stadium one of the louder college football venues in the nation, but things could get even more intimidating for their opposition this coming year. Thanks to some scientific plotting the stadium will have the potential to be almost 50% louder than before. They aren’t adding extra seats nor are they going to pump in loud artificial sound. The new surge of noise will be achieved by relocating the 20k student seats to the southern end zone of the stadium.

A Penn State grad student recorded crowd noise with sounds meters over a span of three home games and determined the noise levels would reach 110 decibels when opposing teams had the ball. After a lot of tests in different seats around the stadium the student determined where the biggest impact could be achieved from the always raucous student section. The relocation of the section means it will be almost impossible for the opponents quarterback to be heard at the line which will inevitably result in penalties and lots of confusion. The Nittany Lions will inevitably benefit from the wonders of science this season and seasons to come.

LaMichael James Pinched

Freshman running back LaMichael James was incarcerated earlier today on charges of “strangulation, assault and menacing.” James was a lighting bolt in Oregon’s backfield this past year and was a sound replacement for LeGarrette Blount after he was kicked off the team for his sucker punch in the Boise State game. LaMichael scored 14 touchdowns and ran for 1,546 on 6.7 yards a carry which has many Oregon faithful believing he is going to be a superstar. It was only a few weeks ago that quarterback Jeremiah Masoli was cuffed on theft charges so something seems to be in the water these days up in Eugene. No one knows right now if any charges will stick on either player, but if they do the Ducks program could be in some trouble. Chip Kelly can’t be too proud of what is going down right now!

Terrence Cody’s Sweater Stretchers

I know lineman have to be bigger than life and eat 5,000 calories or more a day to keep the weight up, but does anyone think Terrence Cody has taken this notion a bit far? Dude has a bigger rack than Roseanne Barr and he doesn’t seem to have any defined muscle on his body. Yes, he could beat me to a pulp in two seconds or less, but come on man!

Lane Kiffin’s Arrogance is Despicable

Lane Kiffin has been with USC for all of two weeks yet he has already found enough time to commit a recruiting violation. According to reports from several sources the new head coach of USC decided to pick up a recruit recently from the airport in a limo. While it is only a secondary violation it is just another example that Lane Kiffin thinks he is untouchable. During his reign as head coach of the Tennessee Volunteers the football program reported SIX secondary violations and the NCAA is looking into two other possible violations. I’m still amazed this joker is regarded as a top notch coach when you consider how poorly he did with the Raiders and was only 7-6 with the Volunteers. If he didn’t surround himself with the highest paid college coaching staff in the nation it wouldn’t take long at all to find out Lane is a complete fraud. I hope USC is happy with their choice now because I don’t think the happiness will last very long.

WTF? WOW! and makes sense

Say it aint so? Another coach ala Mike White from the west coast has worn out his welcome in the SEC.

Lane Kiffin has accepted the USC head coaching job and I think the Trojans really did get their man and he was more than happy to get out of Knoxville and Tennessee is more than accommodating to allow it to happen.

He doesn’t come alone as family and friends are on the plane.  Kiffin will bring his father and defensive coordinator, Monte Kiffin, and assistant head coach and recruiting coordinator Ed Orgeron (ex-Mississippi head coach) to Southern Cal with him. Wide receivers coach Kippy Brown will be named interim head coach at Tennessee, but that won’t last for long.

With Kiffin, USC will get a proven offensive mind who knows the system. Kiffin already has Matt Barkley and he will be able to work with the best QB prospects in the country in the coming years. What the Trojans just did was reload, not rebuild.  I don’t know how they did it, but they got better in coaching plus they have a young team primed for success and they will drive even more recruits to the school. Sorry to my beloved UCLA, but this is a great move by Mike Garrett who I hate with a passion orchestrated this along with Pete Carroll masterfully.

Now, who is the Vols next coach? Does Gruden now have a chance to take over a program where he started his coaching career as a graduate assistant in ’86? I think if he wants to coach college over pro then he wont get better than this, but he could be waiting for or an opening in the NFL in 2011.

Kiffin has left the cupboard full with a young solid team and 22 recruits leading to the #6 overall 2010 ranking from Rival Sports. 14 of the recruits are 4 stars and Kiffin recruited defensive studs, top wide receivers and straight up athletes from all over the country. See a pattern? Sound familiar? This is a win/win for both school. Also, do you really think Kiffin leaves Tennessee for USC if there was a death penalty coming? USC is the #8 ranked recruiting class with only 14 recruits, but of course three were 5-stars and eight were 4-stars.

Aaron Corp Leaving LA

All the news right now at USC focuses on Pete Carroll who is leaving the university to become the next head coach of the Seattle Seahawks. Carroll leaving in conjunction with Joe McKnight and Damian Williams declaring for the NFL draft has pretty much buried the news that backup USC quarterback Aaron Corp is transferring to the Richmond Spiders. Corp won the starting position during spring practice, but ultimately lost the starting job to Matt Barkley due to suffering an injury during the preseason. Corp didn’t want to be the backup to Barkley and since he is dropping to I-AA he can play immediately and will have two seasons of eligibility left. Corp is going to do his best to follow the path Joe Flacco laid a few years back. Flacco was at Pittsburgh, but he was stuck behind Tyler Palko so he decided to drop down to I-AA Delaware and he became a huge star.
