Dolphins Hire New Coach

Miami Dolphins

Earlier in the week we reported Miami was in negotiations with Mike Shula as a possible new coach for the Dolphins. It seems those negotiations were nothing more than Huizenga showing Don Shula respect because the Dolphins have a new coach and his last name isn’t Shula. Cam Cameron the former offensive coordinator for the San Diego Chargers has accepted the job. He led the Chargers to the fourth best offense this season and a 14-2record which was tops in the NFL. San Diego’s offense was nearly two times the output of the 2006 Dolphins. Also, Cameron has either played for, worked with or studied under Bo Schembechler, Marty Schottenheimer, Lee Corso, Sam Wyche and Tom Landry. All in all this looks like a solid choice and hopefully he can rejuvenate one of the historic NFL franchises.

Cutting to the Chase

Chase Utley

Is exactly what the Philadelphia Phillies did with Chase Utley so they could avoid salary arbitration. Utley received a new seven-year agreement for a whopping $85 million. The Phillies not only feel Chase is the best second baseman in the National League, but also one of the top 10-15 players in all of Major League Baseball. Utley hit 32 home runs and had 102 RBI’s along with a batting average of .309 for the 2006 season. Utley is definitely getting a huge pay raise considering he was paid $500,000 last year.

Possible New Miami Dolphins Coach

Mike ShulaI saw this blurb today and found it very interesting. I’m sure Don Shula and his legend with the Dolphins had nothing to do with these interviews.*****Mike Shula already has met twice with the Dolphins about their coaching position. According to a person familiar with the search, Mike Shula’s second meeting, which took place at the team’s facility, lasted four hours. Owner Wayne Huizenga, GM Randy Mueller, CEO Joe Bailey and president Bryan Wiedmeier were present during the lengthy discussions, indicating the interview was not merely a courtesy gesture to the Shula family.– Miami Herald*****

Marty Schottenheimer Staying Put

Marty Schottenheimer

After tons of speculation and some basically writing him off the Chargers and Team president Dean Spanos have confirmed Schottenheimer will return for the final year of his contract. Marty was also offered a $4.5 million extension, but turned down this offer. It would have been a farce to fire a coach who took his team to a 14-2 record in the regular season so I’m glad to see Spanos and General Manager A.J. Smith came to their senses.

God Bless Benny Parsons

Benny Parsons

Today NASCAR and the community lost an incredible man.  Benny Parsons passed away today after being in the hospital since December 26th with complications from lung cancer.  Benny Parsons was NASCAR champion in 1973 and won Daytona in 1975.  Benny also played a key role as a NASCAR announcer with ESPN and most recently NBC.  You will be missed BP!
