Charlie Weis

* Lane Kiffin is the new coach at Tennessee University. I can’t believe any footballl team would want to hire Kiffin after Al Davis so eloquently pointed out all Lane’s flaws on the overhead projector a few weeks ago. 😉

* Stephon Marbury has been suspended one game and fined $400,000 by the Knicks for refusing to play the other night when New York only had 8 active players. It’s clear Starbury is going to do all he can to get his full contract and probably in the end he will get it. The scarier thing to me is that some NBA team will pick Marbury up as soon as he is let go.

* Boise State is going to get the shaft by the BCS bowl process because Utah is also undefeated and will get the at-large bid. This will be yet another example of why there needs to be playoffs in college football, but we all know it won’t happen anytime soon. Do the Yuckeyes get in?

* Iverson skipped practice on Thanksgiving day and is now apologizing for his absence. Practice? We talking about practice?

* Charlie Weis is on the hot seat in South Bend and some say tomorrow’s game against USC could be the deciding factor. Why? We know he is going to lose and if he does get blown out by 30 or more then that is the reason you want to fire him? For some reason I don’t believe this media hype and when it is all said and done Charlie is back with Notre Dame next year. He doesn’t necessarily deserve to come back, but I can’t see Notre Dame flushing $10 million down the toilet for his buy-out.

Worst Endorsement Ever!

Carson Palmer should give every penny he made back to John Morrell hot dogs for this horrendous advertisement. I don’t even know where to begin with all the issues I see with it. Pimpin products ain’t easy Carson huh?

Stat of the Day

Heinz Field

The San Diego Chargers lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers yesterday 11-10. It was the first time in over 12,000 games that an NFL game ended with an 11-10 score.

Even though the score made NFL history the bigger story was the $100 million in legal bets riding on the game and the controversial scenario that transpired at the end. On 1st and 10 from San Diego’s 21 with only 5 seconds remaining Philip Rivers threw a short pass to LT over the middle for 3 yards. Tomlinson turned and made a lateral to wide receiver Chris Chambers, who attempted to pitch the ball to a teammate only to have safety Troy Polamalu deflect the lateral and score from the 12.

Both teams left the field on what looked to be a game deciding play, but were called back by the officials for the extra-point attempt. At that point, the replay official called for a review because any questionable calls under 2 minutes has to be reviewed.

After watching the play, Green initially announced the ruling on the field was upheld and the touchdown counted, but the officiating crew huddled again before the extra-point attempt and changed the call, deciding that an illegal forward pass should have ended the play. Well after the game was officially over Green admitted the touchdown should have counted. Not a real big deal in the end right? Well, that is when things get really interesting.

An estimated $100 million in legal bets was wagered worldwide on this game. Roughly 66% of that money was on the Steelers; with only 34% on the Chargers. If the touchdown was properly upheld, Steelers bettors would have won about $32 millions instead of losing big. This admittedly incorrect call resulted in a $64 million swing in favor of the bookies. How bout them apples?

Stat of the Day

Matt Cassel

Matt Cassel did something last night that no quarterback in the NFL has EVER done. Cassel threw for 400 yards and ran for over 60 yards in an overtime loss to the New York Jets. This is the same quarterback who hardly ever played a down in college football due to the fact he was the back-up for Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart at USC. I wasn’t a believer in Cassel, but now I guess I have to be because those stats are maddening to say the least.

Detroit Lions

* Rumors are swirling around South Bend that Charlie Weis is in a must win situation against Navy this weekend or his job could be in jeopardy. Isn’t Navy always a must win when you are frickin Notre Dame? Weisz has been a bust to date in my opinion so whether he wins this weekend or not he still might be gone this season or next at the latest. Maybe Belicheat has an open gig for good old Charlie.

* Tim Lincecum won the NL Cy Young today and I have no problem with it at all. Brandon Webb and Johan Santana both had excellent seasons, but if you wan win 18 games for the San Francisco Giants you deserve more than just a Cy Young Award.

* College basketball is back bi$&hes. College football, college basketball, NBA, NHL, and NFL makes this the best time of the year! Oh yeah along with Thanksgiving and Christmas. 😉

* The Lions are 0-9 and have to play at Carolina then at home with Tampa Bay, Tennessee, Minnesota then at Indy back at home then against New Orleans and finally away in Green Bay. Can this team really go 0-16? I have said for years it just won’t happen in today’s NFL so somehow or another they will find a win somewhere.

* The ole ball coach returns to the Swamp this weekend when his Gamecocks take on Tim Tebow and gang. I know South Carolina has a good defense, but this game will get ugly. Florida has been on a tear and South Carolina won’t stop the momentum because the Gators want a shot at Bama in the SEC Championship.

Bad News Raiders

Oakland Raiders fans

Things continue to slide further into the abyss these days for the Los Angeles…err….Oakland Raiders. Let’s not forget just this past weekend they were only able to muster 77 yards of total offense against the Atlanta Falcons. Well, today the Raiders announced they are cutting cornerback DeAngelo Hall who they acquired prior to the season and signed him to a 7-year $72 million deal. Hall hasn’t done much of anything for Oakland, but has anyone? Hall will make out with $8 million after playing a total of 8 games. Nice move Al!
