What a Great Week in Sports

Last week was an excellent week in sports.  To start the week we had the Lakers win Game 6 Tuesday in the NBA Finals. Then Thursday the US Open began and later that day the Lakers beat the Celts in a Game 7 which hasn’t happened in over 20 years. Interleague baseball was happening in MLB and if that wasn’t enough we also had the World Cup. The US got screwed on Friday against Slovenia unfortunately, but we were able to laugh at the French team that imploded over the weekend after their coach dismissed forward Nicolas Anelka. Tiger shot a 66 on moving day of the US Open, but in the end Graeme McDowell stood tall and was victorious at the US Open in Pebble Beach.

I neglected to mention the College World Series is also taking place in the last year of Rosenblatt Stadium. Whew, did I mention Texas and their posse are staying in the Big 12 which is now only 10 teams and Utah and Colorado are now in the Pac 10 which now has 12 teams?

I can’t keep up with all the changes these days, but needless to say this past week did not disappoint.  Being a LA Laker fan I have had a lot of anxiety, but throw in a US Open and a US Soccer controversy and it’s enough to make your head spin. UCLA crushed the hated Gators in the first round of the College World Series and having Graeme McDowell on my fantasy golf roster was the icing on the cake.

Sports is my life and it identifies me as such. Happy Fathers Day!

Oh by the way, the NBA Draft is this week, the College World Series continues, Wimbledon starts up, and the US plays their third game in the World Cup.

2010 World Cup Vignettes: What we know about Group B

General:

• One thoroughbred; three hopefuls

• The greatest players don’t always make the best tacticians or coaches.

Group B:

My beloved Argentina appears to be the class of the group. A two-time World Cup winner, Argentina, boasts a cadre of talent, particularly at the striker position, and they have the pedigree and a belief they can win.

Several things concern me about Argentina, however. I don’t see solid tactical decisions in the form of in-game adjustments, formations and substitutions. I see old players in important central midfield positions being asked to perform beyond their capabilities. I see a Swiss cheese defense that better teams will expose as Argentina progresses to the knockout round.

Coach Diego Maradona is god in Argentina, and he brings passsion and a tremendous desire to win to his team. I also commend his commitment to attacking football; however, this team needs better defensive organization and discipline and a coach willing to recognize it. Oh Diego, you will ultimately break my heart.

Nigeria is the only African team in the group, and the only team with little to no chance of advancing to the knockout round. Nigeria has no points from two of the three games they’ll play in the group stage. While not impossible, it’s highly unlikely the “Super Eagles” advance beyond the group stage.

That leaves Greece and South Korea to battle for the remaining spot in the knockout round. South Korea beat Greece 2-0 in Group B’s first game; nevertheless, I give both teams about even odds of advancing. Greece bounced back with a 2-1 win over Nigeria, while Argentina trounced South Korea 4-1.

Greece finishes the group stage against Argentina, and North Korea finishes with Nigeria. Flip a coin or take your pick. Will Nigeria battle South Korea tooth and nail to salvage a result for national pride? Can Greece surprise an Argentinean team, possibly resting important players for the knockout round?

I know who I think will advance but, like most of you, I have no crystal ball handy. That’s what makes watching the Cup so great. Watch and enjoy, amigos.

When did the Refs become the game?

Yes, I’m a Laker homer, but that doesn’t mean I can’t sit here and celebrate with a little angst. The NBA refs in Game 7 were absolutely atrocious and let’s not forget Game 7’s don’t happen often in the NBA. The last one was over 20 years ago so when it does happen and of all teams the Celts and Lakers are the matchup you have to be cognizant of how much this game means. OMG, it was absolutely painful to watch.  Stern, please make sure this kind of referee dominated game never happens again.

Now that I have spoke my peace it’s time to remind everyone the Lakers are back-to-back and they beat Boston. Nuff said!

2010 World Cup Vignettes: What we know about Group A

General:

Vuvuzelas, present at every Cup game, are among the most annoying noisemakers on Earth. It’s like watching a football game from inside a bee’s nest.

South Africa has done a solid job of preparing for and pulling off the World Cup. Several months ago there were worries galore. However, logistics, transportation and security all seem top notch, so far.

Group A:

This is a delicious group.

Uruguay is no joke. Top scorer, Diego Forlan, scores goals aplenty for Athletico Madrid, a Spanish club team from one of the best leagues in the world. Forlan already tallied two goals against host nation, South Africa.

Countryman, Luis Suraez, plays for Dutch giants, Ajax, and he’ll surely generate plenty of interest from big European teams following the cup. He’s yet to prove himself of the World Cup stage, however.

Uruguay, a previous cup winner, is well-coached, has balance, poise and enough talent to reach the knockout round. This is a sleeper team to watch.

South Africa managed a 1-1 tie against Mexico in its first game, a tremendous achievement for the host nation. Unfortunately, the Bafana Bafana simply don’t have the talent or pedigree to progress from this strong group. The South African’s must win against France to make it out of group play and, despite not playing well, France still has too much talent and experience for South Africa.

Mexico managed only a tie against South Africa in opening round play, so it’s pending game with France is critical, for both teams. The team winning the Mexico/France match should advance to the knockout round with Uruguay.

France has more talent on its bench than most teams have period. France’s problem: its coach, Raymond Domenech. Domenech’s players dislike him; the French Football Association dislikes him; and French fans dislike him. His replacement as national team coach waits in the wings until after the tournament. I can’t help but believe this ambiguity, ultimately, stunts France’s chances for progression.

That said, I have no prediction for the France v. Mexico game. There are plenty of intangibles in play. My mind tells me the talent and pedigree of France prevails; my heart tells me not to underestimate Mexico’s passion and desire to win. Those variables generally equate to a terrific game. Let’s hope so for the fans of the world’s most beautiful game.

NBA Finals Bet of the Day – June 17th, 2010

The Celtics and Lakers come down to the all important Game 7 tonight in the 2010 NBA Finals. The Lakers wore out the Celtics in Game 6 so Vegas has set the line at Lakers by seven for this final game. I have to take the Lakers at home because the Celtics looked totally inept last game without Kendrick Perkins down low. Good luck!

Lakers -7

Vuvuzelas Gone Wild

If you have watched a World Cup game in the past week you have without a doubt noticed the ominous bee swarm sound surrounding the TV coverage. The sound you hear actually isn’t the largest swarm of bees to ever sync up rather they are horns called vuvuzelas which are a South African staple at soccer games. These funny looking horns emit 127 decibels which exceeds 125 decibels the threshold for human pain. While most spectators are thoroughly disgusted with the noise pollution two earplug suppliers from South Africa are reaping the benefits in a major way. Sheppard Medical and Ear Plugs Online have sold almost a half million since last Friday and there is still over three weeks to go. Even if ESPN or other networks try to filter out the pollution for TV coverage the earplug companies should have no problem peddling their goods due to those lovely vuvuzelas.

NBA Finals Bet of the Day – June 15th, 2010

Tonight is a crucial game 6 at the Staples Center in LA. The Celtics have two straight for the first time in the series and seem to be in control of their destiny. The Lakers should win and push the NBA Finals to a game 7. Good luck!

NBA Finals Bet of the Day – June 13th, 2010

The Lakers and Celtics series so far has been a joy to watch and neither team has been able to win more than one in a row to date. That trend continues tonight because LA steals another one in Boston. Good luck!

USC Penalties – Update

The NCAA has not been fooled and thus they have really come down hard on the USC Athletic Department.

The findings of the NCAA investigation found issues with not only Reggie Bush, but basketball player OJ Mayo and an unnamed women’s tennis player.

• A postseason ban in football following this season and next.

• A loss of 30 total football scholarships over the 2011, 2012 and 2013 seasons.

• A vacation of all football victories starting in December 2004 and running through the 2005 season. This includes the National Championship win over Oklahoma on January 4th, 2005.

• An acceptance of USC’s self-imposed penalties on its basketball program, which included a forfeiture of all wins in 2007-2008 and a one-year postseason ban.

• All statistics vacated for Bush, Mayo and an unnamed women’s tennis athlete in the games which the NCAA deemed them ineligible due to rules violations.

• All titles won during ineligible games must be vacated and trophies and banners must be removed.

• Bush and Mayo must be disassociated from USC athletics.

• A forfeiture of wins in the women’s tennis program from May 2006 to May 2009, for long-distance telephone violations committed by an athlete.

• A reduction of recruiting days for the men’s basketball program in 2010-2011.

• Four years of probation

USC Finally Gets Their Penalty

These days living in and around Los Angeles doesn’t suck. The Dodgers and Angels are in first place in their respective divisions, the Lakers are up 2-1 in the NBA Finals, and the USC Trojans just got a near death penalty on their football program. The penalty includes a 2-year ban on bowl games, 30 lost scholarships, and their 2004 undefeated season will be forfeited along with their wins from 2005.  As a UCLA Bruin loyalist nothing could be sweeter than to see the grim reaper show up on the Trojans doorstep.  Oh, this has nothing to do with OJ Mayo and the basketball program so I will await those disciplines too.

We all knew the hammer from the NCAA was going to fall it was just a question of when.  Reggie Bush’s constant denial of his family receiving in upwards of $300k in gifts from naive agents that ultimately sued him was a huge red flag. To make it worse Reggie ended up on the first day of the trial giving the agents back their $300k and not saying a word which really smelled fishy.  It was about time this out of control program was dinged for improprieties that were happening.  Why it took so long is an anomaly since we are now in the fourth year of the investigation.

I do have sympathy for this year’s freshman class because they now have to go out on the field everyday knowing they will not see any fruits of their hard work for the next two years.  Sure USC will be able to be seen on TV against the Irish, Bruins and others, but even if they go 12-0 they can’t win a NCAA Championship.  Look for UCLA, and potentially new PAC 10 members Texas and Oklahoma to split the 30 recruits that would have gone to USC and gain a competitive advantage over the Trojans going into the proposed realigned conference.

Yes indeed, this is a beautiful day.
