And the top pick

out of Oklahoma University coming in at 6’7 238 out pounds is…Taylor Griffin. Taylor Griffin you might ask? The brother of Blake Griffin was the top pick today in the Harlem Globetrotters third annual player draft. Until today I had no idea this even existed, but I guess the old saying you learn something new everyday continues to ring true. At least Taylor can always tell Blake that he was technically drafted first because Blake won’t be drafted #1 until this Thursday in the 2009 NBA Draft.

The Globetrotters selected 2009 College Slam Dunk Champion Tony Danridge number two out of New Mexico and the Slam Dunk runner-up Charlie Coley of Charlotte with the third pick. The other two picks consisted of 2009 Patriot League POY Derrick Mercer of American and Tim Howard who is a former high school basketball standout and also a goalkeeper of both the U.S. World Cup soccer team and Everton of England’s Premier League. All the picks will have an opportunity to try out and play for the Globetrotters in their 84th season.

Serena Ready for Wimbledon

Serena Williams won her first round Wimbledon match today against #154th ranked Neuza Silva 6-1, 7-5. By the looks of this picture taken recently while she was out training Serena has her eyes set on a possible third Wimbledon championship. As a side note, is it just me or is Serena looking more and more like Ben Wallace each day?

La Russa Living Legend

Yesterday Tony La Russa won his 2,500th game as a MLB manager which is an astonishing mark when you really stop to think about it. There have only been two other MLB managers ever to surpass this mark and they are Hall of Famers Connie Mack with 3,731 wins and John McGraw with 2,763. La Russa in his 31st year as skipper will more than likely eclipse McGraw’s mark of 2,763 within the next three years, but I don’t see him getting to #1 because Mack managed for a whopping 51 seasons to hit the 3,731 win mark that has him in first place of all-time. I know a lot of people feel that baseball managers have the least impact on professional teams than any other leader, but when you reach a milestone like this people should really stop and take notice.

MLB Bets of the Day – June 18th, 2009

Yesterday was a little rough so I plan to turn things around today. I have four games on the agenda and I like everyone of them. If you want to make some cheddar hop on the bandwagon kids.

Shaq Serious About MMA?

It seems there might be some merit to the rumors that Shaquille O’Neal wants to take on Korean MMA fighter Hong-Man Choi based on this video of Shaq training. Choi is the 7-foot-2, 330-pound beast that beat the ever living will out of Jose Canseco a few weeks back. I can imagine the Suns would love for O’Neal to step in the ring since I’m sure it is a violation of his contract and we all know Phoenix is doing anything they can to unload his huuuuggggeee contract.

Gina Carano Is Back

Former EliteXC fighter Gina Carano has announced her signing with the MMA company Strikeforce. Carano is slated to take on Cris Cyborg August 15th on Showtime. This sets up the most anticipated women’s fight ever considering the Carano-Cyborg fight has been talked about since the two became prominent in the EliteXC’s women’s division during 2008. Carano is 7-0 and Cyborg is 7-1 and both are primarily standup fighters so it promises to be an action-packed bout. I have already added this fight to my calendar because I don’t want to miss Carano in action.

MLB Bets of the Day – June 17th, 2009

I really like Edwin Jackson pitching for the Tigers today plus they aren’t too bad on the road so I like them against the Cards. Secondly, the Cubs are 9-4 in the last 13 meetings against the White Sox so with Dempster going today in Wrigley I will go with the Cubs.

Tigers -100
Cubs -140

Artie Lange on the Joe Buck Live Show

Last night was the premiere of the Joe Buck Live show last on HBO. Joe’s first guest was Brett Favre and I thought he did a good job of asking all the questions surrounding Brett’s possible return to the Minnesota Vikings. It was very evident Favre and the Vikings have been in cahoots for quite some time and Favre’s return to the NFL is inevitable. That being said, the show got much more interesting at the end when Joe Buck invited three comedians out for the final segment. Artie Lange from the Howard Stern Show didn’t hold back a bit and basically took over the show for the final few minutes. Joe Buck was very uncomfortable and unwilling to play along with Artie’s banter. One of the best parts of the second video clip is when Joe turns to Michael Irvin (in the crowd) and asks Michael how he should handle the situation. Classic comeback by Michael to say the least!

Nuff said, Lakers are World Champs

As I predicted, the Los Angeles Lakers won the NBA Finals in five games and it wasn’t nearly as close as the media tried to make it. All hail the Lakers and don’t be surprised if they are back in the Finals again next year. Yes they have some questions on whether to keep Odom or not and they will undoubtedly take a look at the free agent pool this offseason, but with Gasol and Kobe still at the top of their game and the unlimited potential Bynum has this could be another dynasty for the Lakers.

NBA Finals Bet of the Day – June 14th, 2009

The road team is 8-2 in the last 10 meetings and the underdog is 9-1 in the last 10 meetings go tonight my bet is pretty obvious. The Magic’s spirit is broken and the Lakers smell blood. Take the Lakers!
