Tonight comes what I percieve as shocking news out of Lubbock, Texas. Bob Knight has called it quits mid-season as the head basketball coach of the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Knight is the winningest coach ever in men’s college basketball with 902 wins. Knight is not only known as a winner in college basketball he is also known as one of the most controversial coaches of all-time. “The General” had many run-ins with players, students, citizens and of course referees where his fire and brimstone exuded in typical firey fashion. His son Pat Knight will take over the team immediately and Bobby will walk off into the sunset.

Graham Harrell threw for an astonishing 646 yards yesterday against Oklahoma State. Harrell threw five touchdowns along with all those yards, but the Red Raiders still lost the game 45-49. The 646 yards place Harrell as fourth best all-time in most yards thrown in one game. Three of the top five are from Texas Tech and played under offensive guru Mike Leach. You just became the winningest head coach in NCAA mens basketball history. Knight and Texas Tech outlasted the New Mexico Lobos yesterday 70-68 for Knight’s 880th win. 880 wins is remarkable and Knight deserves the respect that comes with this feat.

Texas Tech defeated Bucknell yesterday to give Bobby Knight his 879th victory. The win tied him with Dean Smith for first in wins all-time. Knight has a chance to make history December 28th against UNLV. It’s hard sometimes to really understand how phenomenal a coach Knight is with some of his off court actions over the years.

I have now seen the footage and also listened to many sports analysts provide their thoughts on Bob Knight’s flipping of Michale Prince’s chin last night against Gardner-Webb. If any other Division 1 coach does this when a player approaches the sidelines would it be on television and talked about? Isn’t this really more about some of Knight’s previous actions and the media just trying to bring out those skeletons? Michael Prince has no problem with the incident and he was the player who received the action from Knight. I really could start a long rant here, but I would rather keep it short and sweet. Our society needs to realize Knight truly cares about his players on so many levels and if we can’t allow discipline at this level then we face bigger problems down the road.
