Ana Ivanovic

Ana Ivanovic won her first Grand Slam title yesterday in the French Open by defeating Dinara Safina 6-4, 6-3. Ana will also be the new #1 player in women’s tennis when the rankings are updated. Congratulations Ana and we look forward to watching you play for many years.

Ana Ivanovic

We are still a little sad that Sharapova was beat earlier this week in Paris, but we are very excited Ivanovic is still in the mix. Ana beat Jelena Jankovic today 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 in the semis and will play Dinara Safina in the French Open final. Ivanovic is one smokin Serbian on the real and she can also play some tennis. Enjoy!

Maria Sharapova

Maria fought her way to a first-round 6-1, 3-6, 8-6 victory today over Evgeniya Rodina, a Russian teen making her Grand Slam debut. We were scared for a bit because it would have meant an early exit for Maria and that just isn’t right. This is the French Open at Roland Garros and Maria just has to be in the mix.

Justine Henin

At the ripe old age of 25 Justine Henin is retiring from professional tennis. Henin won two grand slams last year and was #1 in the world upon her announcement today. Also, Justine announced her decision at a news conference roughly two weeks before the start of the French Open, where she has won the past three titles and four overall. It’s really interesting for an athlete to retire so young, but in tennis she is defitely a veteran and the skills go fast.

Ana Ivanovic

Ana Ivanovic

One of our top 10 sports babes Maria Sharapova was smoked today at the French Open 6-2 6-1. The young lady who won is named Ana Ivanovic and is she a delight to look at or what? I can’t wait for the French Open ladies final tomorrow when she takes on Justin Henin. :-)

American Disaster

The French Open

The American men set a ground breaking record this year at the French Open. They collectively went 0-9 in the first round in turn making this the first time in the Open era an American couldn’t make the second round of the French Open. I know clay gives us fits and the days of Jim Courier, Andre Agassi and Michael Chang are long gone, but this is embarassing. I included the full list of players below so feel free to throw rotten tomatoes or cabbage if the urge hits you.

No. 3-seeded Andy Roddick
No. 8 James Blake
Robby Ginepri
Vince Spadea
Justin Gimelstob
Amer Delic
Robert Kendrick
Sam Querrey
Michael Russell

Nadal is Nasty

Rafael Nadal

Rafael Nadal broke the single surface wins in a row mark today with his 76th win in a row on clay. Nadal broke the record that John McEnroe held with 75 wins in a row on indoor carpet from the years of 1983-85. The win pushed Nadal into the finals of the Rome Open to face Fernando Gonzalez. Calle me whacky, but I think Nadal takes the championship tomorrow.

Lets not forget we are three weeks away from the French Open at Roland-Garros and Nadal will be the heavy favorite going into the big event since the surface is nothing other than clay.

Nadal Unstoppable 2

Rafael NadalAs referenced earlier this week, Rafael Nadal loves him some clay surface.  Nadal has now won 60 games in a row on clay after defeating Roger Federer in the finals of the French Open yesterday.  This is two in a row now as a French Open champion and he is quickly becoming as big of a star as Federer.  Oddly enough, Federer actually extended his lead as the number one player of the WTA due to the fact he performed better at Roladn Garros this year then last.  I swear the rankings in golf and tennis are so screwy it’s not even funny!

Rafael Nadal Unstoppable

Nadal extended his winning streak to 57 games in a row on clay at Roland Garros today. Rafael is now in the quarterfinals of the French Open after beating Lleyton Hewitt in four sets. Nadal’s overall record at the French Open is 11-0 and he appears to be headed for a showdown with superstar Roger Federer in the finals. Professional tennis needs a clash of titans sort of match and this would certainly be one. Federer has definitely dominated for quite some time, but Nadal is just the man to knock him of the summit especially on clay.
